"Kirsten, wake up." I opened my eyes to see Jake looking down at me. "We're in a trial, you have to get up." He said. I yawned and got out of his arms. "What's the story?" I asked. Throughout the years, the survivors came up with phrases to communicate things. 'What's the story?' means 'What is the realm and who all is here?'. "We're in Autohaven Wreckers with Dwight and Kate. Also, we're up against the Wraith." Jake replied as we looked for a generator. "Oh, swell." I said, sarcastically. The Wraith could go invisible and sneak up on you.
We found a generator and worked on it. We got it done with no complications and went on to look for another generator. Suddenly, we heard a bell chime nearby. Jake pulled me into his side as we walked around, cautiously. Our heartbeats began to pick up so we quickly went a locker. Jake ushered me inside and was about to leave but, I pulled him inside. Our heartbeats got louder and faster, signalling the approaching danger. Remembering my last trial, I crouched down.
Jake gave me a questionable look but immediately looked away when the locker opened to reveal the Wraith standing there. Jake let out a startled shout as he was pulled from the locker. I saw Jake struggling to get away from the Wraith as the locker shut. I had stop myself from crying as to not draw attention to myself. Jake makes me feel safe and he was taken from me. I heard Jake scream and left the locker after a few seconds passed.
I saw Jake's aura as he hung on a hook. I started making my way towards him but someone got him when I was half-way there. I decided to look for a generator instead. As I approached the shed, I failed to notice a certain teammate of mine trying to warn me to get away. As I walked by the shed, hand grabbed my arm and pulled me into the grass. I nearly screamed but I quickly realized it was just Dwight. He put a finger to his lips and looked ahead of us.
The Wraith, who was currently cloaked, ran by us. We waited until he left completely before moving. "Thanks, Dwight. I would've probably ran into him if you hadn't stopped me." I said. "Don't mention it. Jake would kill us if we let something happen to you." Dwight replied. "I know he's protective over me but why? From what I was told, he's not normally like this." I said as we walked to a generator. "I don't know what it is but, he really cares about you. I think it's because your just an innocent kid who got pulled into the sick 'game'. I mean, who wouldn't feel bad for a kid who ended up stuck playing a deadly game of cat and mouse?" Dwight said as we worked on a generator.
"That makes sense, I guess. But he's, like, really protective over me. He looked like he was about to kill my teammates after my last trial." I said. Dwight shivered, remembering Jake's angry face. "I don't know, Kirsten. It's a mystery." It was silent after that. We completed the generator when I noticed movement behind Dwight. I realized what it was when bells chimed. "Watch out!" I screamed as the Wraith materialized behind Dwight. I ran away, hearing Dwight let out a grunt of pain.
I kept running, while checking to see if the Wraith decided to come after me. I didn't notice I was nearby Jake until he called me. I quickly ran to him and hugged him. He hugged back and led me away. He brought me to a chest and walked up to a nearby hook. "See what you can find in there while I break this hook." He said. I opened the chest after a few seconds and pulled out a flashlight. I walked over to Jake as he finished breaking the hook. "That's good. Flashlights are very useful against the Wraith." Jake said.
"I remember you said flashlights can blind killers." I said. "They can be used in other ways too. You can use them to get rid of the Hag's traps or you can burn the Wraith." He said. "How do I do that?" I asked. "You have to try to get him while he's cloaked. If you see him while he's cloaked, shine the flashlight on him. It'll burn him and turn him visible." Jake replied. Suddenly, Dwight screamed in the distance. My eyes widened. "Dwight!" I yelled and took off in his direction. "Kirsten! Wait!" Jake called. I didn't stop, I couldn't stop. Not when one of my teammates needed help.
I neared Dwight and crouched down, hiding in the rubble. I needed to plan how I was gonna get him because the Wraith was cloaked nearby, waiting. I heard movement and looked to my left. Kate was here as well. "Psst" Kate looked over at me. I motioned her over. "I have an idea." I whispered. She nodded. "Try to get the Wraith's attention while I go for Dwight." I said. "Got it." She said. She ran into the open, making it look like she was going for Dwight. The Wraith uncloaked and began chasing her.
Kate led the Wraith away from the hook so that I had an opening. Dwight let out a small yell and I turned my attention back to him. I saw spider-like appendages trying to stab him! Was this what happened if you were left on a hook for too long?! The others didn't tell me about this yet. But now isn't the time to think about that. I have to get Dwight. I ran up to him and used all of my strength to pull him off the hook. As soon as I did, the spider appendages faded away with a hiss.
I didn't have a medkit with me so, I used strips of Dwight's shirt to cover his wounds. "Be careful next time, alright? I'm gonna go look for Jake. Try to find Kate of you can." I said to him. Dwight nodded and I ran off to find Jake. I found him working on the last generator. His head snapped up when he heard me approaching. He sped walked over to me and, let me tell you, he looked LIVID. "WHAT were you thinking?! You could've gotten hurt like last time!" He yelled. I flinched from how angry he sounded.
Jake sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Come here, babygirl." He said. I stepped closer to him, not minding the nickname. Jake pulled me into a hug. "I just don't wanna see you get hurt. I'm still upset that you got injured last time and I wasn't there to help you." Jake said, quietly. He really cares about me, huh? It feels nice, I didn't have anyone there for me back home. It's not so bad having a bond with someone who cares about me.
Jake kissed my head, offering me a small smile. "Help me finish the generator." He said. We got to work and finished the generator. As we made our way to a door, Dwight cried out from nearby. We froze and Jake grabbed my hand. We hid and watched as the Wraith carried Dwight to a hook. Dwight noticed us watching and gave a sad smile. The Wraith threw him onto the hook. Dwight didn't have enough time to scream as the spider-like appendages appeared again and STABBED him.
My eyes went wide in horror as Dwight's body was carried into a portal. The Wraith was long gone. It was silent. "Kirsten..?" Jake gave me a cautious look. I sputtered as tears began to run down my cheeks. "Ttong." Jake muttered as he picked me up. He held me tightly and rubbed my head, comfortingly. "It's okay, babygirl. Don't cry." He whispered. I shakily clutched his shoulder, sobbing quietly.
I had just witnessed one of my teammates die. This is my first time seeing a death occur in a trial. How could I not be upset by this?! Especially when I was starting to develop bonds with the survivors. Jake carried me to the door while trying to comfort me. "I know, but it's gonna be okay. I'm here with you, babygirl. I'll protect you." He whispered. Jake began opening the door while I just cried into his shoulder.
The door opened and Jake walked through. As he walked toward our freedom, I saw the Wraith approaching while cloaked. I that moment, I felt anger. This was the monster that killed Dwight. I clutched my flashlight in a tight grip. "YOU! You monster! Take this!" I screamed as I shined the light on him. The Wraith grunted and became visible. Jake started running when he realized what was behind us and we escaped.
Jake eventually slowed to a walk as he made his way back to the forest. I stayed silent, resting my head on his shoulder. My eyes began to droop and before I knew it, I fell asleep. I couldn't help but think back to Dwight. 'Dwight, I'm so sorry I couldn't save you...'
