I woke up the next morning to the smell of coffee. I sat up, which was easier now that all the wires were disconnected. I'm still not even sure what all of them did. I assume the were monitors. I didn't mean to sleep so long.
"Here's your grand slam breakfast. The doctor was just here. She is finishing up the discharge papers now. She's gonna show us real quick how to use the machine. Then we'll get Rosie and Zyler and head home." He said. We weren't planning on making to many stops this time around. We needed to get home. I dug into the breakfast. "Oh I'm so hungry." I said. I hadn't been able to keep much food down.
Once I had finished eating and learned how to use the dialysis machine we were allowed to leave. Rosie had packed my bags for me. They had already checked out and were standing at the front of the hotel waiting. Carter came to a rolling stop. They threw all the bags in the back and hopped in. We were homebound. "How about a game of would you rather?" Zyler asked. "Oooh yea" I said. "Would you rather kiss Mac's mom or kiss a Llama on the lips?" Asked Zyler looking at Carter. "You're just mean for saying that. Obviously the llama, no offense Mac." Said Carter. "None taken, she's a lot."
"Fine Would you rather have to listen to only Justin Bieber or only Ariana Grande for the rest of your life?" Carter asked Rosie. "Obviously Justin Ariana is pretty annoying." Rosie nodded. She turned to me. "Would you rather only be able to watch movies starring The Rock or only be able to watch movies starring Leonardo DiCaprio?" "Leo obviously I mean the Rock is really a wrestler...so...yea..." I shrugged. "Would you rather win American Idol or American Ninja Warrior?" I asked Zyler. "Obviously I'm on a music scholarship...but Carter can do American Ninja warrior." He laughed.
"Would you rather never wear deodorant or have really bad dandruff?" Zyler asked Carter. "Oh that's a tough one. You can see the dandruff. But with football Bro sometimes I stink. So I'm gonna have to go with dandruff. Okay Rosie, Would you rather wear winter clothes all year long or summer clothes all year long?" "Gonna have to go with summer clothes. We live in the south it just gets way to dang hot here for way to dang long." She said. "Okay Mac, Would you rather go to school four days a week for 10 hours or five days a week for eight hours?" "Oh four sure four days a week. But I can only imagine the homework they'd give us." I said "Okay Zyler, Would you rather break everything you touch or get shocked every time you touch something?"
"Oh man, I dunno, if I broke stuff every time I touched it I might stop getting invited places. I guess the shock if it's not like super painful? Oh Carter my man. Would you rather be turned down for a dance by someone you do like or asked to a dance by someone you don't like?" He asked. "Oh for sure asked out by someone I don't like. I can let them down gently and then ask out the girl I really do like." He shrugged. "Rosie, Would you rather forget the name of a person you're on a date with or call them your ex's name by accident?" "Call them by my Ex I could claim it was a joke because they reminded me of someone with that name." We finished up asking a few more questions and the back got quiet. Zyler and Rosie had fallen asleep. I knew we'd be ready for food soon.
We flipped through the stations on the radio and chatted about things. "My dad called this morning. They are putting the finishing touches on the carnival. It seems like everybody you've ever had anything to do with is set to come. And they have two nurses there to do the blood tests and keep track of who's who. This is so great. I'm glad we had plan B." Said Carter. "Me too, this is so kind of you to do this." I said. "We would do anything for you, just like you would for us." He said. I nodded. "When it ends...that's how I want to go." I said quietly. "It's not gonna end just yet baby girl, keep your eye on the prize." Since Zyler and Rosie slept a good bit they offered to drive through the night taking turns. Which was great. We got home the next day by dinner.
My grandmother and sister ran out to meet me. "Oh how we missed you so, it's been quiet around here without you and Reba fighting." She laughed into my hair. "I missed you guys too." I said pulling back and hugging Reba. "Your Grandpa is asleep in his chair, go on in and wake him. Toss your laundry in the wash and then we'll eat dinner. I made your favorite lasagna, then you go take a long soak in the tub. We need to be up early to head to the ball park for the carnival everyone has made stuff and this is just going to be the best." My grandmother just kept chatting the way she was prone to doing. But I missed it.
I gave my grandpa a big hug. "Oh my sweet Mac, you're home. I have missed you so. How was your momma?" He asked. Crazy as ever. But what I said was. "Fine." And left it at that. "Well I certainly have missed you baby girl." He said. "You too." I threw all of my clothes into the washing machine and went to the table. "This smells wonderful grandma." I said taking a huge bite and closing my eyes. "We ate a lot of food on the road, good food but nothing beats your cooking." I said. "I'm so glad baby girl." I helped clean up the kitchen and after switching my laundry over went to soak in the tub. I had a book I had started. I brought it with me.
But I could only read a few chapters before I started yawning. I got out, threw some Pj's on and fell into bed. I had dreams of kidneys.
