"Mac, let's go time for your appointment." My grandma called out. I ran a hairbrush through my long blonde hair one last time and ran for the front door.
"Are you nervous?" My Grandma asked me once in the car. "Should I be?" "No of course not." She said patting my knee. "Well, maybe I should be nervous. I've never been called back before after my appointment. And it's something they couldn't tell me over the phone." I said my knee jiggling. "Right, well sometimes blood work can mean nothing at all. That's why you went back twice and it's probably just procedure."
"Maybe but I've never had to get in the machine thingy that checks all of your organs either." I said closing my green eyes. "Hmm." "You know something don't you?" I asked. "No, and even if i did i wouldn't tell you. I don't want you worried." She pulled into a spot in the front of the office.
We took a seat in the waiting room. It was hot and i was sweating. The back of my legs were sticking to the blue leather of the chair. I picked up a magazine from the table and flipped through it. It felt like ages before they called me back.
"Mac how are you feeling?" My doctor asked. "Well other then some drowsiness, shortness of breath, Fatigue and a bit of confusion I'm okay. Oh and I threw up a few times." I said which was why I had made the appointment in the first place. "Is everything okay?" I asked. "Well, I've taken a look at your scans and your blood work. And you're in the late stages of Kidney failure. I'd say you have about three months until your kidneys give out." "I'm sorry, what!?" I asked my eyes growing large.
"It's okay, we have options. We can test your family and find a match." He said. "And I'll put you on the donor list just in case. But it can take a really long time to get one from there." He said. "Okay, well what do we need to do?" My grandma asked. "Just come back anytime and they will test your blood." He said. My grandma was already on the phone texting my sister Reba to come up here. She was thirteen and just going into seventh grade. I was a senior. Graduating and going to the local college.
I wasn't sure what I wanted to study just yet. Maybe social work. Maybe it was because of my past. When I was just seven years old and Reba was just one, my mom gave us up. From what i know my dad had already left. And my mom decided that if my dad could go off and live his dream she should be able to as well. So my grandparents (mom's parents) took us in. And we've been here ever since.
My mom went off to Nashville to make it as a country super star. Only problem was my mom's voice wasn't anything special. But my sister and i got the names Reba and Mac thanks to her love of country music. My actual name is Macintyre. But i wouldn't let anyone call me that. My mom even used to dye her hair red. I remember that from my childhood. It's funny the memories I have of my mother. None of them are really great. My mom trying on cocktail dresses and singing all the time. Just being her star obsessed self.
The rest of my family came to the hospital to give blood. "We'll call you soon." The nurse said. Once we made it home I told my mom i was going to taco Joes. I had to meet my three best friends to give them the news.
Carter was tall and muscular. He had sandy brown shaggy hair and was going to the same college i was, on a football scholarship. Zyler was short and stocky with dark brown spikey hair. He was going to a school thirty minutes away on a music scholarship. With Rosie. She was tall and thin. She had very long black hair that was shiny and a smattering of freckles on her nose and cheeks. She was on a science scholarship and she was really smart.
I was sitting at the table waiting for them to take their seats with their food. "Woah you look like somebody ran over your dog." Carter said. I blew out a breath. "I wish that was all it was." "Oh no it's something bad." Said Rossie. "Well it's not good I'll just say that." I said. "Then tell us. We can take it." Said Zyler. "I'm not even sure i can take it!" I sighed. "I'm in early kidney failure." I said waiting. "What does that mean exactly?" Carter asked. "Well my doctor gave me a lot of information. That sometimes with no real reason certain organs can just shut down." I said shrugging.
"So if your organs...shut down...then what will happen to you?" Zyler asked. I looked down at my taco. "Oh." Said Zyler. "Well then where do we need to go to be tested? If I'm a match my kidney's all yours." Said Carter. "Mine too." Said Rosie. "And mine." Said Zyler. "Oh you guys, you are the best friends a girl can ask for. You don't have to do that." I said. "You're not asking were offering." Said Carter. "Thanks you guys." I said tearing up. "I love you." I said wrapping them up in a hug.
"Come on you'd do anything for anyone of us. It's the least we can do." Said Rosie. I gave them the information as to where they could get tested. We scarfed down our food and headed home.
