In this story (not canon btw), when Nightmare ate the apples and became corrupted, he temporarily lost most of his emotions and all of his sanity. He has slowly been gaining them back.
Error follows along the common fgod storyline sanity-wise. Insane from the voices, Fate, and the anti-void. Goes on a destruction spree. Befriends Blue. Regains control of himself. Eventually becomes friends with the 'Bad Sanses.'
The reason Nightmare's touch turned Dream to stone is because he didn't have any positivity left. If someone else was literally unable to feel positivity, they would also be able to turn him to stone.
Ink eventually found him and broke him out of his stone prison. No one else was present at the moment but he met Blue shortly after and soon the star sanses were formed to try to stop Nightmare in his insanity. This prompted him to act on his internal loneliness as he now had an excuse to find others to help out.
The first and second chapter are going to be rewritten soon.
