WHITNEY’S POV

James dropped me off at Healthy Pets at seven-thirty on the dot. I gave him a kiss before getting out of the car and heading inside. He told me to call him when I got off and he would come pick me up. I declined the offer, stating I could take a cab.

I get out and head inside. A man wearing a white lab coat was at the front desk and I took him to be Dr. Duncan. He was very handsome with sandy blonde hair and neatly trimmed facial hair. I noticed his eyes were a mixture between blue and green when his met mine. He smiled brightly and dropped the piece of paper in his hand on the desk.

“Hi there. Welcome to Healthy Pets where we will keep your pet healthy and happy. How can I help you?”

His voice didn’t sound the same as the man I talked to yesterday but I was very emotional yesterday so this could be him. “Are you Dr. Duncan?”

He gave me a wide smile. “Are you Whitney?”

I nod. He walks around the desk and approaches me. He takes my hand in his and shakes it furiously.

“It is a pleasure to meet you! You really helped me out yesterday with Maxus. Come on to my office and we’ll get the paperwork started.”

He released my hand and walked into the back. I followed him and when we got into his office he pointed to the seat at his desk.

He left the office when I sat down and returned a moment later with a packet. He handed it to me and placed his hand on my shoulder, causing me to look up at him.

“I’ll be out front until Paige comes in at nine. Just come get me when you’re done with everything.”

I nod and he leaves his office. I fill out all the paperwork which takes me an hour to complete. I go out to the front and hand the paperwork to Dr. Duncan. He tells me to man the front desk while he inputs my information into the system.

Paige comes in half an hour later and she gives me a hug. “Welcome to the staff.” she smiles.

“Is it just us three?” I ask her.

“Yeah, hopefully Dr. Duncan can find another vet but I think you’ll help him out a lot.”

An hour later Dr. Duncan finishes inputting my information and he puts me to work right away. By the end of the day at six o’clock Dr. Duncan is so impressed with me because I cleared out all of the overnight animals.

He offers me a ride home when he overhears me calling a taxi. I decline with a smile and tell him the taxi will be fine. When I get in the backseat I pull out the piece of paper with Brad’s address on it. I tell the driver to go there.

When we get there I see Maddie playing in front of the apartment with some other kids and her dog, Maxus. The driver asks if I’m going to get out.

“No, can we just sit here for a minute?” I ask as I continue to watch her.

“I gotta keep the meter running lady.” the driver grunts.

“That’s fine.” I reply.

He grunts again and I roll down the window to get a better look at my baby. She looks so happy and it pains my heart a bit that I haven’t been able to see that smile on her face every day.

The door to an apartment opens and I see Brad appear at it. He calls for Maddie to come inside since its getting dark. She runs up to the door and her dog follows her. I tell the driver to take me home once Maddie is inside.

When I get home James is there and he has cooked dinner. He asks me how my day went as I walk into the kitchen where he is. I give him a kiss before answering.
