I let out a short breath to avoid panicking, and grabbed Robins arm more carefully. I pulled him closer to me, thanking all the gods that she wasn't looking our way.
Robins arm dropped and his hand wrapped around mine, rubbing circles on it that comforted me.
I walked to the food table that had plenty of wine, water and a sorts of fruits. I picked up a glass of water and chugged it down, grabbing another that was gone in a matter of seconds.
Robin just stood behind me, shielding me from their sight, and I was tempted to drop my guard for a second. But I knew that even with Robins wide shoulders I would not be able to hide forever.
His hand braced on my hip and I became more alert. Knowing something, more like someone, was happening.
"I think I've found the real reason you suddenly became worried." Robin said in my ear. "And she's coming this way."
Like an embarrassed child I grabbed his arm and pulled him in front of my face so I wouldn't be recognizable.
Then suddenly a rush of bravery flooded through me. I'm top assassin in the land. My sister is just a psychopath who probably hasn't done anything but thieve for years. I'm stronger than I used to be and I have Robin with me, no matter how useless he might prove to be, he's back up.
I took his hand and went to the dance floor, allowing him guide me in the dance that was happening. I danced in spite, wanting my sister to see me.
I picked the right dance to bring attention to my presence because the dance had a lot of arm movement and it circled the room. I let Robyn's hands run down my body as he pulled me closer to him.
Pushing me away, he spun me and caught my hand to stop a full turn when I was facing out. I made eye contact with her and I smiled.
For a second I let myself believe that her smile back is genuine. I let myself think that we're actually close.
It's not a lasting thought as she moves out of the ballroom quickly.
"She wants us to follow her," Robyn says.
I give him a nod of understanding, and I follow. Leaving the warmth of Robyn's arms and into the cold palace.
:)
A game of cat and mouse proceeded through the castle. Problem was I didn't know who was the cat and who was the mouse.
Glisten led me through many rooms. The library, the servants halls. And eventually the throne room. She sat on the kings throne on the Dias.
"It's improper to come into my life unannounced," she said smiling brightly.
"Where are the prince's stuff," I asked, not caring about intellectual wording?
"And to bring a male along with you, tsk," she said ignoring me question. "An ugly one at that. I thought you'd have a decent taste at least."
"Robyn is better than any man you could ever catch," I laughed, finally giving into her taunting. But I believed it, he deserved much more than to be with someone like my sister.
She only snickered and for some reason I saw red, I stepped one foot onto the Dias, but something pulled my arm before I could move farther. Robyn gently worked his way down to my hand, the world calmed, my breathing became even, and my sister wasn't a big threat.
I stepped back with a warning look to Glisten, wrapping my hand around Robyn's with confidence that he would pull me back from anything that was too much.
One word came to mind in this moment, apologize. I should apologize for pushing him this trip, and for threatening to kill him... many time's.
"Thank you," I gritted between my teeth to him. "And-"
"Glisten we're here to do a job, make this easier for yourself and stand down," My jaw dropped at his words.
He only nodded and continued to talk, but before he could say anything important her lover walked in through the door.
Later, I promised myself. Later I would apologize.
But later wouldn't come for a long time.
