"What could possibly be worse news than one of Lucifer's soul fragments thinking Mingi is some powerful witch?!"
Seongwha exclaimed, clearly overwhelmed.
"Well it could be that Mingi is a witch."
"But he has no witch relatives. Our families have been friends for ages, I would know if there was any chance he could be one."
Hearing Yunho say that made Hongjoong think.
"Wait, there is one way he could still be a witch. If you were around a witch when they died, as long as they were powerful enough, you could then absorb that magic energy. It's unlikely but not impossible."
They all looked to Yunho and Mingi.
"I don't remember ever being around a dying witch and I feel like that's something I'd remember."
"I'll call my mum, she'll probably know more than we do."After a long phone call with his mum, Yunho finally had some answers.
"What took so long?"
Jongho asked.
"She was yelling at me for not calling enough. She said I should come see her more and that Mingi messages her more than I do."
Yunho said sheepishly.
"Well she's not wrong. You should message her more."
"Can we just get back to the current situation. There are more pressing issues than you being a bad son."
Yeosang cut off their conversation.
"That's what I was trying to tell her! But yeah so apparently Mingi was around a dying witch when he was a baby. A powerful one too according to my mum. They were good friends I guess and he was taken to visit this witch in the hospital with his parents when she was dying. She must've passed while he was there and her magic latched on to the closet available host."Silence fell across the room before Mingi exclaimed,
"I'm a witch? This is so cool!"
Seongwha and Hongjoong sighed.
"There's a demon out there that is literally a fragment of Lucifer's soul that wants you dead and you're excited because you have magical abilities?"
Y/n laughed at this.
"I mean, it's probably a lot more interesting than just being human. He's got a cool backstory now. We could write a book on him or make a movie series. 'Song Mingi- the boy who tried his best'. I'd go watch it."
Seongwha hit the back of his head.
"Every moment you are in my house you make me regret not leaving you on the doorstep to die."
"Okayyy, that's a little aggressive Seongwha."
"Aggressive would be me smiting you where you stand."
He glared at the demon.
"Fair point. But anyway, what are you gonna do now?"
"I'll put up holy barriers around the house keeping all hell spawn away and if anyone tries anything I will launch them straight into purgatory."
Y/n sighed at the Angel.
"I think we all know holy magic isn't gonna keep a demon like that out.""You know that's not too bad of a plan."
Hongjoong said.
"You're kidding me?! I'm not letting that demon stay here!"
It was obvious Seongwha would object. The plan was honestly a good one and probably the best option but the Angel wasn't going to let the demon stay in his home any longer than necessary.
"Who would've thought, Seongwha has a problem with Y/n staying here."
The sarcastic remark came from Yeosang.
"You all know my issues with demons. I'm not letting one stay here. And I'm especially not letting him make a deal with Mingi again. The first one was bad enough!"
Everyone was tense. Though Seongwha had a reason to be angry, he was usually quite rational, often doing things because they were morally right. He knew his objections went against his usual thought process but he wasn't thinking as clearly as he usually would. After a long talk and a very reluctant compromise, all eight men agreed that Y/n making a deal with Mingi was in everyone's best interest. The deal meant he'd always be close by and if anyone tried to approach him for his magical abilities, there was always someone to help defend him. Hongjoong would teach him magic so that he could better protect himself and Seongwha would put up with Y/n so long as he didn't do anything to put anyone in danger. Apart from the obvious objector, everyone was actually quite happy to have Y/n around. If he wasn't a demon, even Seongwha would've liked him but unfortunately he couldn't let the negative bias go.
Later that night, Mingi had set up a spot for Y/n to sleep in his room. Y/n insisted that demons don't need to sleep and he didn't need to prepare something for him. The tall male was hearing none of that, however, and even Y/n had to admit that Mingi's sleep spot looked quite comfortable.
"I appreciate the effort but it really wasn't necessary."
Mingi sighed.
"I know that you don't sleep but I'm not just gonna let you stand there and watch me while I do! You can rest there instead and if you get bored you can try sleeping or just play on my switch. Don't play on my save files though."
Y/n smiled.
"You're probably my favourite person I've ever worked with, you know. Nice, friendly, never asked me to kill your husband. And other than Seongwha, your friends haven't threatened me just for existing."
Mingi laughed at him.
"Is the bar really that low for the people you've met?"
"The last guy I worked with wanted me to kill his wife and kids because they found out he was having an affair. Imagine cheating on your wife then trying to kill her. Some people have a different kind of audacity."The two boys talked a little bit more before finally going to sleep. Mingi liked having a roommate, even if it was for his own safety. Something about Y/n just made him easier to talk to. Maybe it was because the demon treated him slightly differently than all his other friends. Sure, he appreciated knowing everyone around him would die to protect him but, it made him feel like he was too weak to be considered equal. He was a capable adult and he could take care of himself. He didn't always need the constant protection. He loved all of his friends but it sometimes felt like a burden being human.
Y/n treated him like he was just another person. Even though he was there to protect him, he didn't feel like it was just because he was human. It felt more justified to him. The demon also seemed more used to humans. He felt more equal with him. It wasn't that Mingi was treated unfairly by the others though, he was just more sheltered by them. Maybe things would be different after learning magic.
The thought of change was definitely anxiety inducing but maybe it would be good for them. It helped Mingi sleep easy knowing that things might be different.
It has been a while! I'm so sorry it's taken so long. A lot has happened since I last updated. I went to see Ateez for both London dates and it was the best concert I've ever been to. I am still very much in love with Mingi and Hongjoong but somehow Jongho has olympic high jumped into joint 2nd place on my bias list. He bias wrecked me hard lol. Him and Yunho broke into my house, stole my food, flooded my kitchen and hit me with a car while fleeing the scene and I'm just okay with it tbh.
Also I titled and started writing this chapter way before I went to see them but it's quite fitting considering Yunho admitted he's a wizard.
I just finished my final major project as well so I'm writing this in the park near my college. I should be updating a bit more now cause we're going back to our old timetable. I'll put a picture of my final piece below cause I'm really happy with all my portraits
This is the digital display version cause my wattpad doesn't like the photos I took of the physical version apparently.
I'll be updating this book more often now (hopefully) so I hope you all enjoyed this chapter!
