CHAPTER 2
~Scarlett~
I remember that look. I always had and I'll never forget it. It's the same look that she made when she figured out that Jonathan told me that he liked me and when she killed that Louie guy when he touched my ass. We were seven years old and she was only protecting me. I tried to explain that to the Council but they didn't care, they just wanted to see a child almost whipped to death. The Saibroes are treated unfairly by the Council and I knew that even as a child. Those damn Council judges punished a Saibro child like they would to a grown man who killed an entire village. Since that incident, Snow seemed far more distant to others even though she always had a smile on her face. It's like she's right in front of me but I can't reach her.
I led Snow away from the girl who saved us and deep into the Dark Forest that turned pitch black when we entered, even though it was only six twenty in the morning. I followed the smell of a small grove of fruit trees three hundred and forty-one degrees north about ten meters away. We arrived five minutes later, with Snow still staring into space, making me worry. I sat her down on a potruding root and did the only thing I could think of that will take the spacious look off her face. I slapped her as hard as I could without breaking her cheekbone.
"The heck!" Snow cried, standing up from the root of an apple tree. She rubbed her red cheek and scowled at me, making me crack a small smile while I shrugged.
"That wasn't my fault," I said after I grabbed a crimson red apple from the spot above my head, "You were in a daze and I had to snap you out of it."
She quickly snatched the apple from my hands and rolled it around her hands. A sign that I've eventually figured out meant that she was thinking about something.
"I'm sorry, Scarlett," Snow apologized to me before she took a bite out of the apple, her crunchy chewing echoing through the forest, bouncing off the overgrown trees.
"For what? Eating my apple?" I asked sarcastically. Snow cracked a small smile and shook her head no.
"It's just sometimes I feel like-" Snow started to say before a twig snapped behind me. We both froze in our places with Snow in mid chew, her mouth wide open. The Dark Forest has many dangerous creatures lurking around every corner and it's darkened environment is ideal for the deadliest creature of all. A Bainlyt.
Bainlyts are creatures that are six feet tall, with ash colored fur and fangs like tusks that are about three feet long. Their fangs/tusks are tipped with poisons that can kill any creature besides its kind, even poison immuned Saibroes. These creatures are the most frightening type of monsters that you pray you never encounter as long as you live. Other than its looks, a Bainlyt's brain is a quarter larger than a humans so it can outsmart us easily. We held our breaths, not daring to move at all since it can be a Bainlyt, or worse, a Bainlyt that hasn't eaten for months. The footfalls got closer and according to how loud it is, the creature is about one hundred pounds which is how much a two month old Bainlyt weighs.
A faint shadow that somehow reflected in the dim forest came closer and before I knew what happened, a large net with cannon balls tied at each four corners fell on top of us and trapped both me and Snow, pushing us down on the dirt. The shadow came into my full view and with the help of my keen sense of sight, I could see from the dark that it was the same blonde girl that helped knocked me out when I was fighting the one silver and one hazel eyed guy.
"I see you two have escaped," the blond said with a sassy smirk on her face that I would love to slap off if I hadn't have a net weighing me down. She took one step closer and bent down close enough so that I could smell the strong perfume that she doused herself with. It's a wonder this girl isn't dead yet, by the amount of scent that she's giving off, I'm sure a Bainlyt would be on her trail, ready to eat her for breakfast in the Dark Forest.
