The last bell rang, a symbol that us slaves of the school system were free for the next two months. Chairs clanged against desks and books and stray papers were shoved hurriedly into backpacks as everyone rushed to get out of the stuffy classrooms. The hallways were packed with students streaming out from doors, opening lockers, signing yearbooks and hugging goodbyes. The only teary eyes were those of the seniors, who would not be trudging to Westville High next September. Although, I did hear a few of the 12th graders cackling in glee as they slid down the stair railings and launched themselves out the front doors, never to be seen again.
I couldn't help but grin at the sight. At the start of the year it was like time was stuck in a viscous substance, going by excruciatingly slowly. It felt like time itself was taunting us and trying to suck the hope out of it all. But right now, it was as if September was just yesterday and in the blink of an eye I was transported to the present moment.
"HELLOOOOOOO?! Earth to Damian, can you hear me?" A high-pitched voice jolted me out of my musings. I looked down to see my friend Yuna Han staring up at me with an amused smirk on her face.
"Nope, can't hear you over the sound of my raging thoughts. Alas, I am so forlorn." I covered my face with my hand and put on a tragic expression, earning a laugh and a punch on the arm from Yuna.
"Haha, very funny. If the young master would join his poor, neglected friends at Chatime, my purpose would be fulfilled." she curtsied, pretending to play the part of a Victorian housemaid. I chuckled, enjoying the familiar banter and fell into step beside her.
Summer was off to a great start.
