"absolutely slaughtered, i'd be"

Donnagh sat down at the table where her daughter was doing her homework.

"We getting a chippy tonight Ma?" Ciara asked, not looking up from her maths work.

"Yeah, well it is Friday isn't it?" Donnagh chuckled.

Pretty much everyone in Derry got a Chippy on a Friday, the Ma's all got a day off from cooking and almost everyone else was just happy to have some greasy food.

Ciara nodded, "yeah, the girls are all gonna be there. They're picking up stuff for their families too, so I'll go tonight."

Donnagh's ears pricked up, "Oh and...is James gonna be there?"

Ciara finally looked up from her work, "what's that supposed to mean Ma?" Ciara narrowed her eyes.

"Well it's just...you're always talking about him and how 'nice James is' and how 'glad you are that James came to Derry." Ciara's Mammy teases her by imitating her.

Ciara stuttered, "wha- uh - wha- that's because James is my friend Mammy. Like..." Donnagh gave Ciara a knowing look. Ciara gave a sigh, "okay, maybe I like him a little bit more than a friend but he's Michelle's cousin Mammy I-"

"So?" Donnagh questioned.

"So..." Ciara sighed, "she'd murder me. Absolutely slaughtered, I'd be."

Donnagh got up from her seat and stood behind her daughter, placing her hands on her head and tilting it to force her daughter to look at her.

"Ciara O'Hara, your face lights up when you talk about James. Who cares what Michelle thinks, build up your confidence then just go for it." She reached back and grabbed a bit of paper off of the counter behind her, "now, hop down to Fionnula's and get our dinner would ye?" She shoved the paper into Ciara's hand.

Ciara spent the whole walk to the chippy thinking about the conversation with her Mother. She had admitted to herself that she likes James Maguire. Now she just has to tell him.

As Ciara entered her local chippy she heard Fionnula say, "it'll be ready when it's ready."

The girls turned around and Clare said, "Ciara, you're here! Thought your Da normally came to get the Friday chippy."

"Well, I knew you'd all be here so I thought I definitely had to come this evening." Ciara gave a bright smile which was soon removed when Fionnula shouted,

"What'll it be for you?"

Ciara jumped, then shuffled over to the counter and passed the list over to Fionnula, "thank you, Fionnula." She murmured quietly. Fionnula gave a grunt and a nod, letting Ciara know that she'd get it sorted.
