The Barricades

"Eponine!" I whispered in the darkness. She turned her head in surprise. "Azelma! Go! Get out of here!" I shook my head sternly. "No, sisters stick together. Always." I tried to get to where she was. Instead, I reached a hand out, "Eponine, you're going to die here, there's a reason why girls are not allowed to go to barricades." "Azelma, I can't let Marius die, I can't," "I know, and I can't let you die either. " "Azelma! Get down!" Eponine whispered. I turned slightly to see a boy coming my way. I quickly ducked under some boards and bandages. The boy grabbed a gun and walked away. "It's not safe for you here, you need to go." Eponine said. "I'm staying with you." I said. "At least go hide in another place, this place you're in is to obvious." I nodded and slowly got up and creeped along the wall, hiding every time I heard voices. I was so distracted I bumped into someone. At that moment I was glad I had decided to dress as a boy. I scrambled to get up, "I'm sorry, Monsieur." I murmured. "No, it was my fault." The man laughed. "I'm Enjorlas, you must be new." I nodded and tried to slip past him.

He didn't let me go easily, though. "Where are you going in such a hurry? We're all friends here. Who brought you here?" I gulped, he was asking so many questions, questions I didn't want to answer. Suddenly, Eponine grabbed my shoulder and said in a gruff voice, "she's with me." Enjorlas looked at her curiously and Eponine met his gaze, unafraid. She dragged me over to a spot that would conceal both me and her. "What do you think you're doing?" She partially

screamed at me. "You told me to move, and I bumped into someone." "You 'bumped' in to the leader of the barricades! Now he's going to be suspicious that you aren't around very often." I huddled up in a corner. Eponine's eyes softened when she saw me being so afraid. She sat next to me and put her arm around me. "Azelma, I'm not going to beat you like Thenardier does. I promise I will protect you from any danger." I smiled up at her, and she smiled back.
