Azelma is the second child and younger sister of the Thenardier's. Eponine and Azelma are very close. Madam Thenardier and Thenardier beat Azelma. Eponine hated to see her sister being beaten. The years of beatings Azelma had scared her so that she is shy and withdrawn. She is afraid to stand up to people because she is afraid she will be punished. When they weren't physically beating Azelma, they would make fun if her and tell her they didn't love her. It was no secret that they loved Eponine more, they never beat Eponine, physically or emotionally. Azelma is forced to take part in the schemes Thenardier does to get money. Azelma doesn't show her feelings on the outside, because she knows she'll get nothing from doing so.
