I skipped through the streets, eager to see Enjorlas. We have gotten a lot closer lately. I smile as I think of Enjorlas' gift to me on my birthday. It was a red rose, my favorite flower. I still melt when I think of what he said. "I'd hoped this would make up for all those times of no birthday presents. I know this is your favorite flower, that's why I picked it. I hope this will show you how much I love you." And it did, and without knowing it, the rose come as a sort of symbol to our relationship. I entered the inn smiling, then, my smile vanished. "Azelma, you worthless child! Why haven't you been doing your job?" Madam Thenardier glared at me. She reached up on the shelf and brought down the iron bar. My face paled and I started backing up to the door. She was coming towards me with the bar raised. Just then a strong hand cupped my shoulder. "Don't go near her, Madam. Or you'll have me to answer to." Madam Thenardier stopped and said innocently, "I wasn't going to do anything. I was merely going to ask dear Azelma to go throw this thing away." Madam hurried back to her duties. Enjorlas' hand left my shoulder and squeezed my hand. "You okay?" He whispered. I nodded, still trying to process what just happened. Enjorlas took me and guided me through the busy Paris streets. He lead me to a shaded tree. He sat next to me and put his arm around me and hugged me close. "I told you I wouldn't let anything happen to you," he said. I smiled up at him, "thank you, I don't know what I would have done without you." Enjorlas smiled a small smile. "I need to talk to you about something that's been on my mind a long time." "Okay, you know you can tell me anything." Enjorlas still hesitated, he cleared his throat uncertainly. "I- I have to leave," stopped smiling, heartbroken. "What? Where? When?" Tears came to my eyes. "My father, he.... I left for Paris soon after my brother died. My father never forgave me for leaving my mother and him in such distress. Then I started the revolution, and he didn't like that either. He said he was glad we didn't win. And now mother has recently died and I don't want to make the same mistake I did all these years. So, I decided I would go stay with him." By the time he finished I was crying. Once he saw me he took me in his arms. "I'll only be gone for a short time," he said. "But who knows if you'll come back?" "I'll come back, I promise."
"When are you to leave?"
"Tomorrow."
Enjorlas held me in his arms and before I knew it, I had fallen asleep.
I sat up in my bed. Wondering how I got here. The last thing I remembered was Enjorlas holding me. That's when I remembered he was supposed to leave today. I jumped out of bed, hoping with all my heart I hadn't missed him. I hurriedly tried to make myself presentable. I ran to the train depot, dodging the carts and people. "Enjorlas!" I shouted as soon as he came into view. He turned around and smiled, opening his arms for my embrace. I smashed into him. "I was afraid I had missed you," I whispered. "You didn't, though my train leaves in ten minutes."
"I'll miss you," I said, trying my hardest not to cry. "I'll miss you too. Here," Enjorlas whipped a red rosé in front of my face. I smiled, "thank you, I'll keep it forever."
"I know you will." Enjorlas tipped my face towards him. "I love you, Azelma, I always will." That's when the tears started flowing a study stream. Enjorlas whipped them away. He kissed me and hugged me close. "All aboard!" I heard the conductor yell. Enjorlas picked his bags up and ran towards the train, waving. I waved back till I could see him no longer. I tucked my black hair behind my ear. That's when I realized I must have looked horrible. I walked home in the rain, thinking. Will Enjorlas remember me when he comes back? Will he come back? All these thoughts overwhelmed my head. I collapsed on the bed, exhausted, and fell asleep.
