tw: facial dysmorphia (i think pls let me know if that's wrong)
It seemed that the mirror was Dream's greatest enemy these days, which he could hardly believe he was admitting– yet he can't help but despise it with every fiber of his being.
He despised how disgustingly honest it was. He knew every time he looked back at the reflective glass, he was staring at his unfortunate reality. That every imperfection he saw was what everyone else saw, all the time. Dream could at least limit the amount of time he spent looking at himself, only giving glances or even opting to keep the lights off when it was dark enough outside. But everyone else had to see everything he loathed, and Dream couldn't feel more sorry for them.
They could see every acne scar that littered his cheeks. The eyebags that he seemed to have been born with. Every pore that was filled with so much grime it had turned black, despite his constant scrubbing. His teeth that were slightly too yellow and slightly too crooked from a lack of dental care when he was younger. His eyebrows that he had to pluck every so often in order to not grow a unibrow.
The scar on his nose that was pale and slightly raised compared to the rest of his skin (it would always draw someone's eyes toward it and Dream would always notice). The freckles that were just a little too dark in some places. Even the shape of his face was uneven (he figured that out from a filter on Tiktok and now he couldn't unsee it).
Dream never understood why people revered the term 'beauty mark'. Clearly, it was made up by a person who didn't have one, maybe trying to make someone else feel not so much like a freak for having weird spots and lumps on their face. Dream always thought it was condescending. A poorly hidden mockery.
His mother adored saying that to him whenever she could get a chance. She also made it a habit to bring up his horrid features whenever she was around her friends. "Clay has such lovely beauty marks," she would say, "especially the one on his chin- oh it's just so unique." A shiver would run up his spine every time he would hear her sickeningly sweet voice talk about his odd traits.
The one that outshines all the rest is the 'beauty mark' on the right side of his chin. It had started out as a freckle when he was younger, but over time it grew and eventually turned into something he would equate to a mole. He wasn't actually sure if that was the correct term, but it seemed to fit much better than anything else he'd heard people call it. It's not much bigger than the eraser you would find on the end of a pencil, but it stood out significantly. Dream absolutely hates it, and yet the world decided that this was something to be desired. Something that people would choose to replicate on their face to appear prettier. Even his mother was completely enamored by this parasite that lived on his skin. Dream couldn't wrap his head around it.
When starting his youtube career, there was a brief moment in time where he could've done a very botched face reveal. It could've been a simple post on his Instagram or Twitter, but he chose not to. It was the one time in his life when he could choose that someone didn't have to look at him- at his defects- and he lept at the opportunity. As he grew it became a part of his brand, which he could not have been more pleased with. He would never have to show his face to the public, no one would expect him to ruin his online image
It was also a similar situation with his online friends... until it wasn't.
Sapnap originally had been an accident, a mere misclick during one of their Skype calls. Dream avoided his friend for a week before being spammed to play with him again. Sapnap never addressed it, not once, just continued on as if it hadn't happened. At first, Dream was on edge, just waiting for a comment about how oily his skin was, but it never came. He eventually fell back into the familiar rhythm of their friendship, but with the addition of a piece of tape covering the camera of his laptop. As they got older and more involved with being online personalities, Dream passed it off as being nervous on camera, he was never sure if Sapnap believed it or not.
