THE IRON MAIDEN

It was a device so fiendish it was once thought to be fictional. It's an upright sarcophagus with spikes on the inner surfaces. Double doors open on the front, allowing entrance for the victim. In one example, eight spikes protruded from one door, 13 from the other. Once the victim was inside, the doors were closed. There, the strategically placed spikes would pierce several vital organs. However, they were relatively short spikes, so the wounds wouldn't be instantly fatal. Instead, the victim would linger and bleed to death over several hours. To add to the abject horror of it all, two spikes were positioned specifically to penetrate the eyes.
In the 1800s, researchers found one in a castle in Nuremberg, Germany, and documented proof of its use later surfaced. For this reason, this device is sometimes known as the Iron Maiden of Nuremberg. Other names included The Virgin and, in German, Jungfer. A variation found in Spain was made to look like the Virgin Mary, and had machinery that, when manipulated, caused her to "hug" the victim close to her spikes
CHAIR OF TORTURE

One of the simpler but effective medieval punishments, the iron torture chair pierced a person's body at every point of contact. These points would go in deep enough to break the skin, but not far enough to damage any vital organs or major arteries. The person wouldn't even bleed very much, since the chair would plug the wounds until victims were removed.
HERETICS FORK

This torture device consists of a metal piece with 2 opposing bi-pronged forks attached to a strap. One end of the device was pushed under the victim's chin while the other goes against the sternum. The victim is then hung from the ceiling and the strap was used to secure the heretic fork around the neck of the victim. If the victim's head dropped, the prongs would pierce the chest and throat.
NECK TORTURE

The neck torture was sort of an endurance test which involves hooking the victim into a neck device that's either made of wood or metal. The cruelty of this torture lie within the fact that it prevents the victim from eating or lowering their head for days.
THE PEAR OF ANGUISH

Particularly hideous, this simple mechanical torture device would be placed inside the orifice of a person and then gradually expanded. The kindest use was in a person's mouth where it would ultimately shatter the skull, causing death. More gruesome is when it was used on parts in the lower half of the body which were rarely fatal, but excruciating.
BREAST RIPPER

The breast ripper was something specifically designed for women. This device was designed to cause major blood loss. The ripper's claws, which were usually red hot, would be placed on the exposed breasts as its spikes penetrated beneath the skin. It would then be pulled causing large chunks of flesh to come off.
