. . .
Ode to my grandpa
You show me what beauty is really made of
It's made of leaves and trees not makeup and hair
You are as wise as an owl in the stories you told me at night
You show me what life is about
About loving and caring not being rich and famous
You showed me that there is more to life
Not just city lights and air conditioning
But camp fires and lightning bugs
You showed me the love a family could hold
Full of joy and laughter and tears and pain
Together.
I remember your teasing that was full of smiles
The way your eyes would light up like stars
Your loud laughter and easy joy
The way you brought life into the room with your confidence
Your strong arms full of beautiful embraces
Your calloused hands from days of hard work
Working with hammer and nails
And working with rope and high sails
You were fearless and full of curiosity
So intrigued to learn more about this dark world
The world that you knew was made light
By only one God
Your God, and my God
You believed down here
Your faith as strong as the mountains you faced
As deep as the oceans you crossed
I didn't know you that well
But I want to know you
And I want to know what you knew
At the end of a hard week
I know that you would have persevered
So I do my best to pray up to the God that you prayed to also
Now you are with Him
And you would say not to miss you
But I do, I miss you, and I love you
