I stand in Magma's living room in total shock. When she screamed in the bathroom I thought that something was terribly wrong, and I was right. She writhed around on the floor still wet from the shower as her body started to cover with scales and claws formed. She was screaming so loud she couldn't hear me when I tried to see what was wrong with her.
Afraid to touch her because I thought she might change completely I continues trying to talk to her when she said she needed fire. I immediately scooped her up and brought her near the fireplace. I was in such a panic to get the fire going I couldn't light the matches properly.
Then he was here. Maximus appeared in front of Magma. When he looked at her he immediately knew what to do and acted. He threw a black glass sphere from the mantle into the fireplace and easily lit the match.
When he started dragging her near the out-of-control fire I rushed forward to stop him when he pushed me back as he dragged her into the flames. I was so scared in the moment that I screamed trying to shove him out the way so that I could save her. He quickly secured my arms and pulled me away from her as my gaze never left hers. The fire grew as it surrounded her and then she suddenly began to glow scarlet.
For a moment I thought her skin was popping out in scales and that she would still change. But it was a gods honest actual glow as if there were red florescent light bulbs under her skin. For a moment, the color was blinding. When I finished blinking so I could see her once more the last of the flames were disappearing into her mouth. She looked out at the room in a daze and then she collapsed in the remnants of the fire.
I rushed over to her to her to make sure she was okay and unharmed. I pulled her from the fireplace into my lap and just held her to me.
"What the hell did you do, human?" Maximus roars from where I left him standing. In my daze I forgot that he was here.
"I don't know what happened. She screamed and I tried to help but I didn't know what to do" I gush. "I should know what to do" I cry.
I feel like something really bad just happened and I have no idea what to feel. I really thought that I almost lost her. "She had to have been really pissed to respond like this. Do you know what could have happened if she had transformed here. She could have hurt herself and you. You have to know why she responded this way you are the only one here." He screams as I think to see what I could have done to anger her. "if I hadn't have showed up her transformation could have killed you. Do you have an idea how much that would have broken her if she were a reason you were hurt" he bellows.
I blink through the tears in my eyes as I watch him pace. I would never want to cause any pain. I would never want to intentionally upset her. Then I freeze when what I did pops into my mind. I had just meant it as a way to tease her. I feel intense guilt form in my chest at what I did. I never imagined that her and her beast would be angry at what I had done. I close my arms against her tighter as I look at the anger beast in front of me.
"I'm so sorry. I had no idea that she would get this upset. What I did was meant to be a tease" I whisper.
"You are an idiot. Our beast are basic creatures. They don't understand jokes and sarcasm. Everything to them is real" He says in frustration as he continues to pace. "Everything you do means something. Your mean everything to her and here you are taking all of this as a joke. You need to stop playing games and do your part. You are the only chance she will ever get" he berates me.
"How can you say that when we barely know each other. Just as her dragon chose me it could choose another" I yell starting to get angry. He stares at me in disbelief at what I said. His jaw clenches as he folds his arms in thought.
"She needs to rest. You are lucky I was near to help, or this could have ended much worse. I would advise you to ask her what you mean to her when she awakes. It's the only thing that could prevent something like this from happening again. I won't see her hurt all because you can't take your head out of your own ass" he says. Then as usual he disappears from the room just as fast as he popped in.
I look down at the woman my in lap trying to see where I went wrong. I would need to find some way to make this up to her. I gently lay her on the floor as I move to gather pillows form the couch. I lay beside her in front of the fireplace in case she needs it again. As she sleeps I watch her for any signs of distress afraid to let her go.
I never want to let her go. And as I have this thought it's like everything comes to focus. I may have said earlier that we hardly know each other.
However, after all that I just witnessed and what I know. I know that somehow this beast of a woman is slowly worming her way into my heart.
