"Dad, you can't just pull me out of school if we're not moving!" A thirteen year-old Sam exclaimed, before reconsidering. Directly contradicting John wouldn't gain him anything, "When can I go back?"

John pursed his lips, "Never."

Sam blinked, "What? Why? Dean's still going!"

"Dean's a different case."

"Why can't I go?!"

"It's complicated."

"It's not legal for me to never be going back to school. Somebody'll show up for me, and then they'll realize how much of the crap we do is illegal, and then-"

"As far as anyone's concerned, you don't exist."

Sam's voice caught, before he managed, "What?"

"Stop asking so many damn questions."

Sam shut his mouth, but for anybody's sake, he wanted to keep asking the damn questions. How could dad do this? How'd he do it at all? And why? What was the point? Did Dean know? Why was Dean a 'different case'?

Instead of asking any of those things, he grit his teeth in frustration and left the motel room for the library.

He kicked at a trash can as soon as he was clear of the motel room. He wanted to cry, and he was confused, and he didn't want to be here. He didn't know what he meant by not wanting to be there, because where else would he be, but damn, he meant it.

He picked at a torn bit on his sleeve as he trudged towards the library.

It wasn't far, and he was there soon. He pushed open the door and immediately made for the nonfiction section. Everything already felt too unreal for fiction. But to get there, he had to cross through the kid's section. He didn't much mind that, just pushed his way past colorful shelves, but was stopped by a little girl, who looked kind of... Disturbed? Upset? Something.

He wasn't feeling particularly like it, but he asked her, "Hey, you okay?"

She replied quietly, "What's wrong with your eyes?"

Sam blinked, confused. There weren't any mirrors around, so he whipped his phone out of his pocket and opened the camera so it'd be facing him.

And he was faced with the reason he was no longer in school, with the reason why John looked so uncomfortable around him, with what happened when he got emotional. Though he didn't know any of that.

All he knew was that his eyes were black as night.

Demonic.
