"I'm sorry you had to watch that." Ellie apologized to Karl as they were walking back over to his hotel room. She hated that he had just witnessed that, even though it felt good to finally put McKenna in her place, she still felt a little weird about it; like maybe she was too harsh or just flipped out for no reason.
"Ellie are you kidding, that was so badass." Karl joked but he could tell from her body language that she didn't think the same. "Hey, and I'm proud of you for sticking up for yourself... you did the right thing." He assured, the statement made her feel more relaxed, especially coming from him.
"Yeah, she was always so brutally honest about everything and I guess—"
"Wait, you know what she was saying wasn't true right?" Karl cut her off, wanting to be sure she knew that he or she didn't believe any of the nonsense McKenna had said tonight or in the past.
"Yeah..." She replied but Karl wasn't too convinced.
"First of all, you're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen and if anything I'm out of your league." Ellie tried to bite back a little smile and the blush that arose on her cheeks and the butterflies that erupted in her stomach but Karl kept going.
"Second of all, you're so smart, like, so so smart. You always know the answer when we watch jeopardy and those are really hard questions." It was part of their nightly ritual to watch jeopardy together over FaceTime. Karl never really watched the show before her but he decided to watch after hearing how much she loved it. He would also notice how many of the facts she knew and he was always impressed with the amount of knowledge she obtained.
"And as far as the last comment she made, you know I don't care about that kind of stuff and I don't think you're a prude or a slut because you don't owe me anything. I like you because you're you."
"Can I kiss you?" Ellie was just so overwhelmed with the amount of kind words and support Karl was giving that words wouldn't have been enough to express her appreciation.
Karl took her question as an invitation to lean in and press his lips to hers. She melted into the kiss and let him pull her impossibly closer; his hands wrapped around her waist while hers wrapped around his neck.
In the midst of getting lost within each other as the pair kissed, they were too entranced by one another to realize that the elevator dinged and its doors opened, letting another person on.
Upon the realization, they pulled away from each other, flustered and awkward; trying not to burst out into a fit of giggles while a blush adorned both their faces. Only allowing themselves to do so once they exited the elevator, leaving the stranger behind.
The rest of Karl and Ellie's night was filled with giggles, kisses, and cuddles as the two basked in each other's presence. Karl was sporadically scattering kisses to the crown of Ellie's head as she picked out a movie for them to watch, giggling every time he did so.
The nature of their relationship left Ellie wondering what would happen after they went their separate ways tomorrow. She knew that going back home was inevitable but now that the day was creeping up on them, it got a whole lot more real.
The other big question that was floating about in Ellie's mind was of course; 'what are we?' She didn't want to ask him and be that type of girl. She didn't necessarily need an answer any time soon, she just wanted to make sure Karl felt the same way she did. Which was that she wanted more than just this.
She didn't want to go back to the way that it was; she didn't think she'd survive if it went back to the way that it was, not after discovering how great life was with Karl.
He made her happy. And that might sound like a stupid thing to say because 'of course he makes her happy' but no, Karl made Ellie, happy. Happy in the sense that when he was around, she wasn't anxiety ridden. Happy in the sense that she felt like she could truly be herself with him. Happy in the sense that she didn't feel so lost anymore.
And as Ellie laid upon Karl's chest for the third night in a row, Karl couldn't help but let the thought cross his own mind: 'what are we?'
They looked like a couple and acted like a couple but it just wasn't official yet. And Karl knew that it was probably too soon since they had just met in person this weekend but he couldn't help but wonder what a relationship with Ellie would be like.
Would she move to North Carolina for him? Would he move to Canada for her? Would they keep it a long distance type of thing? All questions he didn't know the answer to. He wished it wasn't so complicated but as long as he got to be with her one way or another, he didn't care.
He didn't care how long it'd take, how much it would cost, or how hard it would be; all he cared about was her, his Ellie.
