The next day as Riley arrived at school, she was wearing Ashley's favourite Nirvana t shirt that she had borrowed from her, black skinny jeans, a red flannel tied around her waist and her black doc martens.
As she was walking towards the doorway to her first class of the morning, history, she noticed a group of girls giving her nasty looks from the back of the room. As she sat down at her desk, she felt a crumpled piece of paper hit the back of her brown hair. When she had opened up the note, it read, "No one likes you and no one will EVER like you. Your such a loser, and that's all you will ever be. Do us all a favour, Riley Thompson, go kill yourself."

Her heart sank into her stomach, her face turned bright red, and she could feel tears streaming down both of her cheeks, ruining her makeup.
She bolted out of the room, sobbing, and ran into the bathroom and locked herself in a stall. She began to cry as she was sitting on the toilet in the empty bathroom of her wasteland of a school. As she wiped up her tears with a piece of toilet paper, she remembered what Ashley had told her, "If you are ever upset about anything, try to listen to Nirvana, it helps me forget about the problems."
Although she didn't have the album with her, she began to sing "Heart Shaped Box" in her head. Suddenly, she didn't seem so upset. Riley was about to get up and leave the bathroom and return to class, but then she heard a voice say "Riley Thompson please come to the office, Riley Thompson to the office."
As she walked toward the main office, she noticed her father, Oliver Thompson, sitting on one of the chairs outside the door. "Dad?" she said, "What are you doing here?"
Her father stared at his daughter with a depressed look on his face, tears filling his eyes, and finally mumbled out the words, "Riley, sweetie, there's no easy way in saying this, but your mother has breast cancer. The doctors aren't sure how much time she has left with us. Im really sorry sweetheart."
Riley stood in front of her father, in shock, speechless. It took her a minute, but she went up to her dad and hugged him as tight as she could. She could feel tears stream down her face once again.

As if school wasn't bad enough, she had just found out her mother has breast cancer. Riley thought to herself and said, "Nothing, not even listening to Nirvana can fix this."
