Adelaine's POV

I sat in math class at Fairview Middle School, feeling kinda bored. We were going over material for an upcoming test, but today we were just doing busywork. Math isn't my strongest subject nor is it my favorite subject but I already understood what we were learning about very well. I had already finished my assignment. It wasn't like it would be that hard to goof off. I don't really goof off in class, but it was a Friday and this was the last period of the day. Another one of the reasons I could easily get distracted is because my best friend Lexi Turner was in that class, as well as my boyfriend Hugh Anderson. We'd been dating for around five months. I don't want to get too distracted though. One of the reasons I would not want to be caught being distracted is because I didn't want to upset my teacher. The long-term substitute would scold us and leave a bad note for our real teacher. Our usual teacher had gone on maternity leave. This was so exciting. The usual teacher was my mom. I'm so bored! I hummed and looked around the classroom. The sub was on her phone. I sat in the front, right next to Lexi and Hugh. Hugh had already finished his assignment as well. Lexi was still working on the assignment. I would have helped her but the substitute teacher was very snappy. Hugh stuck his tongue out at me and I quietly giggled, sticking my tongue out back at him. A few seconds later, the bell to end school rang, which I was grateful for. Our test would be on Monday and we needed to turn in our assignment now if we hadn't turned it in already. Hugh and I sling our backpacks over our shoulders and walked out of the classroom holding hands, but we waited on Lexi. Lexi slinked up to the substitute's table, handing in her assignment. She walked out of class and brushed past us, walking rather quickly.

"Oh, Lexi! We're waiting on you!"- I say, trying to hurry after her.

"Signora Lexi! Please, wait up!"- Hugh adds, walking to catch up to us both.

I caught up to her. Lexi's pace had slowed. One hand was holding the strap of my purple backpack, and one hand holds Hugh's hand. Hugh did the same. Lexi puts the blue pencil she had been writing with and working on the assignment into the pocket of her blue band merch hoodies. She was rather quiet and she stuffed one of her hands into her pocket and her other hand rubbed her eyes. Is she sick or something? She'd been acting odd all day. She sniffled and I had gotten concerned. We walked outside to the bus loop. Now since we're in middle school, Hugh rides the bus too.

"Lexi, are you okay? You are awfully quiet."- I say.

"I'm fine."- She replies.

"Are you sure? You aren't acting like you usually do."- Hugh replied.

"I'm just a little upset."- Lexi replied.

"What's bothering you?"- I ask.

"Just the substitute... and that assignment."- She says softly.

"You've been acting off all day, way before Miss Jones' class."- Hugh replies.

"I saw you working on that assignment... did you have any trouble? I know you struggle with things like that in math."- I reply.

"I did. I just... really needed a while to concentrate. I wish the substitute was more helpful... or even let us work with others, instead of just snapping at us for even making a peep!"- Lexi replied.

"Yeah. I agree. I wish I could have helped you."- I reply.

"Yes, I would have helped you if I could."- Hugh adds.

"When will Miss Jones get back?"- Lexi asked, looking at me.

"I forgot about that... Miss Jones is your Mom."- Hugh muttered.

"Yes Hugh, our math teacher is my mom you dork. And Lexi, I don't know when my mom should be back in school but I think it would be after the birth of my little sister at the sixth-month mark. I don't think she'd be back here at school until next year."- I explain.
