That night, they had regrouped in their hotel rooms, Velma doing her research when Scooby and Shaggy ran into the room.
"Where have you been?" Velma asks. "The library closed hours ago."
"The...what?" Shaggy comments
Velma rolled her eyes and said, "Nevermind."
Velma continued typing up.
"I found plenty of information online. there definetly was a Phantom in the 70s, but I don't think the one we saw today was the same person." Velma said, pulling up the first photo she had of the Phantom. "This photo's from earlier tonight."
"Where'd you get it?" Daphne asks
"It's all over the internet! Talent Star's really milking this for publicity." Velma comments, pulling up the two photos she had. "See? The outfits are different."
"Yeah, the one from the 70s has puffier collar cuffs and whiter sleeves." Serena comments
"I think what we saw today was someone taking advantage of the old stories for their own purposes." Velma comments
"But didn't you guys see him vanish on a monitor?" Serena asks. "He's gotta be a real ghost."
"We saw it on a monitor. Could've been faked." Velma responds
"So who's our likely suspects?" Clemont comments
"Definitely Chrissie's parents." Daphne responds
"You're right!" Fred responds. "The Phantom seems awfully interested in making sure Chrissie wins the competition."
"And that Pimiento guy." Bonnie states. "It was strange how quickly he began using this for publicity. Could he be doing this for rating purposes?"
"What about Mel Richmond, the guy who owns the opera house?" Ash comments. "Maybe what he said about insurance money wasn't such a joke."
"What about Dewey Ottoman?" Daphne comments. "He's kinda creepy."
"What about Lotte?" Shaggy asks
"You think Lotte is the Phantom?" Daphne asks
"She's the right height and scarier than the Phantom!" Shaggy responds
When putting the list together, Velma hummed in thought.
"Everyone on this list except Mel Richmond and Lotte have been seen at the same time as the Phantom." Velma states
Fred got up and stretched.
"Guys, it's getting late. There's the dress rehearsal in the morning and then the big show tomorrow night." Fred comments. "I say we get some sleep."
"Right." Ash comments. "See you all in the morning. Come on, Pikachu."
That night, when everyone was in their sleepwear, Daphne, Velma, Serena, and Bonnie slept in one room whilst Fred, Shaggy, Scooby, Clemont, Pikachu, and Ash slept in another room, with both rooms being connected. However, Velma woke up, noticing Serena out on the hotel room's balcony and grabbing her glasses to put them on before walking out.
"Hey, you having trouble sleeping?" Velma asks
"Yeah..." Serena responds
"hey, what's the matter?" Velma asks
Serena sniffed before saying, "I'm fine, Velma. Just some sleep trouble, that's all."
Velma could see right through Serena's lies. She may not be a life long friend of Serena's, but she's known her long enough to see through these kinds of lies.
