Carla and I wander into the one-level school. It's cold and dusty. The classrooms closest to the entrance seem to each have makeshift beds in them. These kids seemed to have made themselves a home. We wander into a room that seems to be what used to be a gym. Sunlight leaks into the room through small windows giving little light to the room. There's a shelf with cans of old food against the wall along with a table and bucket right next to it. In the center with chairs all around. It is almost like a dining area. The table next to the shelf holding utensils, can openers, plates, and other small items to act like a kitchen.

"Hey! Check this out!" Carla calls me back into the hallway and to what used to be the closet for a Janitor. An old red rusted wagon sat in the middle surrounded by shelves covered in supplies the kids found.

"They survived 10 years by themselves strictly off of what they found laying about... If they're infected how did they survive this long?"  I question myself out loud.

"Who the hell cares, My job is to help dispose of the threat." Carla points at herself proudly "Yours is to collect samples for testing after they're dead." Carla points her finger into my chest and gives a light push before walking off. "I don't see anyone here, let's go" Carla keeps going to the exit as I follow burying my nose into my notes. By the time I look up we're outside, to my right are the two lifeless bodies. So young. My heart aches with the thought that maybe they weren't infected or dangerous. I force my thoughts deep down and away, I have work to do and need to remain focused and professional. I can hear the soldiers in the distance to my left marching, guns at the ready searching for anyone else. 2 down 3 to go... That we know of... Wolves howl in the distance pulling me out of my head.

"There are wolves in this area?" A look of confusion passes through Carla's face.

"The animal population has been growing along with the vegetation since humans weren't here to prevent them from doing so. In a way you could say mother nature or mother earth is taking her land back." Carla turns her head to me as I speak.

"So what kind of animals are we talking about?" concern leaks into her voice.

"I don't know, wolves, bears, deer, cougars, anything previously living in the area or nearby and traveled here." I sigh taking note on my clipboard about the animals completely unfazed.

"Great!" Carla dramatically throws her arms in the air and drops them back down again. "Not only do we have infected children on our hands but we also have wolves, bears, cougars, and who knows, maybe the virus made the animals mutate into monsters."

" I doubt it but I guess you can't rule that out completely."  I sigh placing my pen in my breast pocket. I walk past a wide-eyed Carla as she nervously chuckles. I think she was joking and didn't expect me to say it is a possibility but it is. Some people who caught the virus received some disfigurations. Each province tried to evacuate everyone to one location separating the disfigured and everyone else in the hopes one group would survive. These kids must of accidently been left behind during the evacuation. Maybe they got scared and hid then resurfaced after people were gone. Our armed soldiers are long gone searching.

"I'm going to the trailer to get started on the samples." I spin on my heels making my way back to the cars, one of which pulled a larger trailer along with it.

"I'll join you! Us girls got to stay together!" Carla follows with a hop in her step. I grumble under my breath about her cheeriness through the present situation.

I hunker down in a booth seat at the table inside the trailer with Carla across me. She kicks her feet up as she relaxes on the surprisingly comfortable cushioned seats. I pull out my laptop, opening it and placing my notes next to it. Carla's eyes wonder the trailer with boredom before landing on me. She watches as she has nothing better to look at. I pull out a box like device with a screen and a dipped circle for me to place drops of blood samples.

"What the hell is that? Looks like an over sized covid test... if covid test were electronic." Carla questions pointing at my new device.

"Its my newest invention, it tests the blood for me and tells me what i need to know. I have yet to name it. I just call it 'My Device'" I explain

"'My Device'?  just call it 'MD' or 'Ted'" She smile moving her hands around in the air as she speaks.

"Ted?" Carla shrugs her shoulder and a slight smile creeps across my face for a second before quickly disappearing again.

"I saw that smile!" Carla points excitedly in victory.

"Shut up." I chuckle before pulling out my blood samples so I may proceed in my work. now dressed in blue with my mask, gloves and Carla now as my twin I place some blood into my device. While we wait I type my notes onto my laptop.

Click, click, click. Carla clicks her tongue as she impatiently waits, drumming her fingers as if she's attempting to write her own song to a beat in her head. It may be good in that empty head of hers but out loud its annoying.

Bing! My device is ready with the results. I grasp the small device in my hands and stare at the screen.

"According to this they were healthy and clean of basically anything."

"So they weren't infected?" Carla tilts her head at me.

"I think so."
