Changes (a teen titans reader insert)

(4) Purpose

"1" Red X grabs my hand.
"Jump." We both leap out of the helicopter.

I've never felt this feeling before. I felt free. I felt happy. Although I was still holding on to his hand for dear life. We were falling for maybe 30 seconds, or it just felt like that.

"Pull the string!" Red X shouted out to me, I saw his free hand was holding his, waiting for me to have mine ready. I move my left hand and grab on to the release. He counts down from three. On three I pulled mine but nothing came out. He hadn't pulled his yet. I start frantically pulling my string.

"Hey woah stop, stop." Red X says. He saw the panic in my eyes and pulled me in, we wrapped our arms around each other. I didn't think about the mission while falling, maybe because I finally had someone to fall with.

Once I was secure on him he told me to 'hang on' and pulled his string. His parachute came flying out.

That moment of freedom was ripped away.

We landed on the roof, I stumbled a bit but was caught. We both took a second to look around to find the sun roof. We walk over to it and look in. It's a dining room, blue themed it seems. The latch was locked from the inside, but I just used my power to flip the switch. Red X opened the window and I hopped in first. He came in right after me. It wasn't hard to find the tech we were looking for, it was literally displayed in the middle of his kitchen. Red X was cautious about alarms but I didn't think there was any, I opened the glass casing it was in using my power, no alarm. Red X grabbed the tech and put it in the little box my father supplied for us. We went back out the way we came in, closing the window behind us.

Once we were up on the roof I smiled at him from behind his back, He was looking off in the distance while waiting for our ride.

"Looks like I might just get to keep all my fingers." I said to break the silence.

He looked back over to me and said, "Not yet."

I walk over next to him and see the Titans, but they're missing a fighter.

"Look who it is. And it seems she made a new friend." The metal man said, talking about Red X.

"Two against four." Red X paused, "I like those odds."

"We're not letting you get away this time. We may be down one but we're still stronger than ever!" The green one yelled.

"What's a team without its leader?" I asked menacingly.

"Still a team." The metal one replied, blasting at us with his arm. Red X extended his arm and a literal red x shot out, blocking the robots blast. Ok. So not only is his name and costume red x but his power is too. Great.

I took a few steps back and observed. Red X launched himself in the air and started shooting red x's out of his hands at the metal man, causing him to fall back. The green one launched himself toward Red X, turning himself into a lion. Red X just simply stuck his hand out and what seems to be some sort of red paint shot out and hit the green lion. While I was watching him fight, I noticed the red haired and purple cloaked ones began charging at me, I got ready to fight, igniting my power in my hands but before I could even hit them, Red X threw an x at the red haired girl, locking her onto the floor. The cloaked one tried to cast a spell, or something, but got a red x on their mouth stopping them from speaking. The robot came at me and I held him still with my powers, my white energy surrounding him, allowing Red x to come behind him and power him down.

We just took down the Titans.

Our helicopter came back and threw down a ladder, we climbed up it and sat back down in our original seats.

"You never told me you could do that." I said to him.

"You never asked." He replied coldly.

"I just figured you were more for hand-to-hand combat. I mean where did those X's even come from?"

"I made them." He said. "Can I ask you a question?"

"Go for it."

"Do you ever wish for more?"
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know, do you ever wish to be someone some day."
I paused to think of my answer, "I mean, of course I do. As I grow up the more I want to get out of this hell hole."

"If given the choice," he stopped for a moment, "Would you leave and join the Titans?"
I looked over at him, scanning his mask with my eyes, "I don't know... Would you?"
"In a heart beat." He said looking over at me.

Once we got back to my house, Red X presented the box to my father. He looked pleased.

My father was behind his deck, Red X and I stood side by side in front of it. I had my hands behind my back, my feet together and my head down. Red X had his hands by his sides, feet separated, and head looking straight forward.

"I am very happy with the outcome of this mission." My father started, "I know that the group of 'crime fighters' came back but it seems you two have taken them down." He paused and looked at me, "Show me your hands." I made eye contact with him. My hands begun trembling. "Show me your hands." He repeated, more stern than before. I extended my arms and rested my hands our in front of me. My father reached out and held my hands from the bottom and began counting.

"One, two, three, four, five." He paused and looked up at me, then continued.
"Six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Ten fingers. Congratulations." He replied dropping my hand and turning to walk back over to his desk. I immediately pull my hands in and crossed my arms in front of my body.

"You two work lovely together." My father started. "Tomorrow night there will be this big party at the Pizza Corner, the Titans a rumored to be there. Y/n, you will go in and learn more about Robin. Maybe have a few drinks with him, make him tell you everything he knows." I looked down at the ground. "They shouldn't know who you are without your masks on."

"I will not be taking my mask off." Red X interrupted.

"A shame. You would've just been lookout anyway. But I don't want you there to blow her cover. You are excused. I will call you when your services are needed again."

I lift my head and look over to Red X, he looks over at me and begins walking out.

"You need to rest." My father continued, "I don't know if you will have to fight tomorrow. You're excused." I walked out and closed the door behind me. I ran to catch up with Red X.

"Hey." I said. "Thank you for the help today. That's the proudest I've seen him since the... It's the proudest I've seen him in a while."

"I'm just doing my job." He replied. With that he walked out the door. I stood there for a moment then turned back and went to my room.
