I woke up
eyes blinded by the light
I thought I was in heaven
but heaven had smiles

Don't get me wrong
there were smiles all around
but they weren't warm
or inviting

They were cruel
vicious; evil in fact
I knew that this wasn't heaven
heaven didn't have bars
heaven didn't lock you in a cage
a gilded cage
designed by your own art

There was pounding all around me
as dozens, if not thousands of voices
chanted at me
chanted all sorts
telling me to do things I wouldn't dream of

I could feel my legs collapse under the weight of my body
as I sunk down into the floor
drowning, holding my head in defeat

There was a hand
I saw it myself
a hand that reached out
telling me to grasp it
and I did
I listened
I finally caved and I listened
the voice was something I hadn't heard in a long time
it didn't chant
it didn't sound mad

Instead it was peaceful
a type of peace that could end wars
that could save lives
a type of peace that would silence the voices in my head
the voices that told me to do things I wouldn't dream of

That voice, I realised, was you
my saviour
the one that saved me when I was drowning
in a gilded cage
designed by my own art
