I woke up
eyes blinded by the light
I thought I was in heaven
but heaven had smilesDon't get me wrong
there were smiles all around
but they weren't warm
or invitingThey were cruel
vicious; evil in fact
I knew that this wasn't heaven
heaven didn't have bars
heaven didn't lock you in a cage
a gilded cage
designed by your own artThere was pounding all around me
as dozens, if not thousands of voices
chanted at me
chanted all sorts
telling me to do things I wouldn't dream ofI could feel my legs collapse under the weight of my body
as I sunk down into the floor
drowning, holding my head in defeatThere was a hand
I saw it myself
a hand that reached out
telling me to grasp it
and I did
I listened
I finally caved and I listened
the voice was something I hadn't heard in a long time
it didn't chant
it didn't sound madInstead it was peaceful
a type of peace that could end wars
that could save lives
a type of peace that would silence the voices in my head
the voices that told me to do things I wouldn't dream ofThat voice, I realised, was you
my saviour
the one that saved me when I was drowning
in a gilded cage
designed by my own art
