As I opened the door and felt the chill on my face I realised it would be a cold trip, and I hated to admit it but mother was right when she told me to get my cape. I watched the icy blue heavens, there were some clouds to be spotted. But the sun was shining and making the wet autumn leaves shine.
The cape I was wearing, it sure was a luxurious cape. It was big, comfortable and unusually thick. The only thing I didn't like about it was the colour, it was red. Normally that would be seen as pretty, but due to the jealousy of all the children in the village I was almost always teased when younger. And red didn't fit me, I somehow looked mismatched. When I was younger it was less of a problem, from a measuring point seen. Children are cute in anything. But I am now almost 16, and the cape barely reaches my thighs. "I look like a huge child." I thought to myself, as I watched myself in the glass window of our house. But no time to bother that, I had an errand to do.
The stone covered streets were full of people, it was the rush time of the day. It always was in the early afternoon. The sounds of heels and shoes on stone echoed through the whole town square, and people were seen in robes and coats everywhere. And some of them with capes, like me, although not as colorful. People were rushing in and out of the stores and the very few who still managed to have the market outside had many customers too. As I wandered the streets, took turns left and right to get to the outskirts, I thought "This village only gets bigger."
It wasn't always like that, just a few years ago the village was about half as big as it is now. But that's no wonder, I mean the village position on the map is hard to find. And if you find it on the map, the chances to actually get here alive is even less. The village lays very isolated, but it's a big village and you can find almost everything here. There's even a doctor, who is married with the best seamstress of the village. But, the only way to come to the closest city and the roads connecting us to the rest of the country is through the woods, and it's not the most pleasant trip for those who do not know the surroundings....Actually, it's not a pleasant trip for anyone. But even so, the village keeps growing to the point of becoming a city. And it's all because of the hunters. The woods lay around our village and the closest way out takes days by horse. And there are unknown creatures in the woods. Some of them is said to eat you alive. And when evening comes, you can hear them howling. Thus no one came to our village.
But now times the creatures of our woods have become an enormous rumor through the whole kingdom. Men come from all around, even from other kingdoms, to show their power. And it makes the ladies around here squeal, but it never occurred to me as amazing our breathtaking. I mean, I've walked those woods since I was a kid. My grandmother practically lives there. Seeing those men get praises just for coming out alive from the woods, it's kind of hilarious. Some of them bring a rabbit or a raccoon or fox. But none of them have ever brought one of the so very rumored wolves, actually, no one has ever seen a wolf in our woods....Yet, at night, we all hear the howling.
