*Haley's POV*

Because I don't give a crap about people who call me wimpy or weak, I'm just gonna admit that I cried for five straight days after Danielle abandoned me. And then I moped around the house for the rest of the summer, watching Netflix, eating chocolate, and going on my phone.

The truth is, I didn't really have a lot of other good friends other than Danielle. We just spent so much time together that we didn't really care if we didn't have other friends. When Danielle decided to go off to Nashville and become a superstar, that pretty much left me in the dust.

It was the first day of school, junior year. My mother decided that right before the bus came was the perfect time to give me a little beginning-of-the-year pep talk.

"Haley Marie Haines, I am tired of seeing you moping around the house and doing nothing." My mom said sternly.

"But I have no friends. What am I supposed to do about that?" I asked.

"You make new friends, Haley. You are a smart, kind, beautiful girl, and I know for a fact that there are plenty of girls at your school who would love to be your friend." Mom said.

"That's preposterous. No one wants to be my friend." I rolled my eyes.

"You know what, Haley? I have had ENOUGH of you sitting on the couch and doing nothing while all of my friends' kids are going out on Friday nights, swimming, having coffee, taking risks, and just being friends together. You know Mrs. Costello?" Mom said.

"Alex's mom? The one who lives down the street?" I wondered.

"Yes. She's in my book club on Thursday nights. She said that the school activities fair is on Wednesday. If you don't sign up for at least one club or activity, I'm taking your phone away until you do." Mom stated matter-of-factly.

My mom knows I cannot live without my phone. She must have seen the look in my eyes, because after that, she said, "So, we've got a deal?"

"Deal." I said. She held out her hand to shake, and we shook on it.
