This was supposed to be the best of his life. His wife was about to give him a son, the man walked back and forth, biting his thumb before the entrance of the operation room. He was about to become a father. Keeping his guard over the doors, observing everyone coming in and out, he waited impatiently until he would be invited inside.
Eventually, as he wished happened, and exhaling relieved, he stepped inside while the nurse smiled brightly, signaling him he was permitted to. Glancing around, his eyes immediately caught a glimpse of his wife and locked on her, while he beamed with happiness.
"Hello, darling," he passed the few of the doctors who were walking around, making the final examinations, and stopped by the bed his wife was laying on. "How is mommy feeling?"
*Beep, beep, beep.*
"Wonderful," she smiled, panting exhausted, and gripped his hand, knotting his fingers with hers. "When would they bring him?" She frowned fretted, gaping at their tangled hands. "They took him after everything ended. I-I didn't have a chance of seeing him yet."
"You didn't?" He scowled when she shook her head and looking around he glared at the medical staff. "Excuse me, but where is my son?" He snarled harshly, receiving a squeeze of the hand from his upset about it wife.
*Beep, beep, beep.*
"I'm sorry, sir," the doctor corrected his glasses and inhaled, anxious. "He was taken on additional inspection, but I was assured you were informed about the possibility of it."
"Yes, yes," he stroked his brows. "We know about the leg, or rather its lack," he flinched when the woman behind him hit his forearm, offended. "Sorry," he smiled at her innocently and glanced once more at the doctor. "However, I don't understand, why would you keep him away from the mother? Doesn't she has a right to see her baby as first?"
"I understand your distress," the doctor was called and started walking backward from them. "Although, you have to understand that the quicker we find some diseases, the better," he ran inside another, nearby door.
The man sighed, turning to his wife, defeated. "I'm sorry, love," he scratched his beard, anxiously. "You'll have to wait a little more for him."
"That's fine," she waved her hand and sank into the bed. "The most important is that I'll see him at all."
"You are going to have a whole life for it," the corner of his mouth lifted while he sat next to her. "You'll get bored of that soon," he chuckled and she joined him, happily.
"I doubt it," she heaved a sigh when the man leaned over her and wiped the sweat from her forehead. Thereby, she winced, concerned. "Why is it taking so long?" Her lip trembled, and witnessing so, the man hissed, guilty. "I'm just afraid something is bad with,"
Instantly, she was interrupted by loud crying, followed by the entrance of a doctor from the mystery, nearby door. "There he is," he smiled brightly while holding a bundle in his arms. "Henry Haddock," he went through obstacles such as chairs and medical equipment, but subsequently he got to the target which was the mother's bed. "Take good care of him, miss Haddock."
Carefully, he lowered the tiny figure toward her, and passing it to him he beamed stebbing aside, making space for both of them. After nodding to the doctor, she gazed at her son and her eyes teared up, while her husband stared at both of them, delighted.
His family, he let a single tear flow through his cheek. The beautifulness of the scene, the happiness of his wife, every detail of that moment was the ideal finish of that day for him. The best day of his life, he chuckled under his nose, cheerfully.
*Beep, beep, beep.*
In the meantime, the woman forgot about the surrounding medical staff and equipment, but also about her husband by her side. Her whole attention was on a little infant by her chest, breathing steadily. The tears streamed down her cheeks, while she kissed her son's forehead, gently. The tint boy hiccupped, and she giggled, softly.
"My sweet boy," she rocked him, lightly. "My little Hiccup," she heaved a sigh.
Eventually, noticing her husband's presence, she smiled at him brightly and showed the boy before him. The shocked man observed his son cautiously. He was little, horrible tiny. Was it even healthy to be so small? He wrinkled his nose but loosened himself after a moment. His wife always has been skinny and rather bony, so it must have been something he got after her.
*Beep, beep, be-*
Immediately, everyone around became alert at the sound of a stop of the heart action. The woman's body went limp, causing the man's panic, but also every nurse around. The little boy cried, while his terrified father's concentration was on his motionless wife. There were orders made by the doctors, but despite that, the man didn't hear either of them while he lost any contact with reality.
Suddenly, the nurse took Henry, but the man didn't react to that. What caused his later outrage, was when doctors planned on taking the woman away to another operating room and he went berserk. The three men had to pin him down, while he stared at her leaving bed, depressed. His family, he cried, hard.
_______________
His whole world shattered on the finest pieces, unable to be organized back together. His wife, his love, his happiness of life, Vanessa Haddock, died. Her death was unexpected by anyone, caused by exhaustion after labor. She had a heart attack nobody was foreseeing and nobody could handle in time.
Henry happened to be a premature baby when a month before the planned date his wife went into labor. There was nothing that would have caused that. Every doctor considered it could've been the decision of mentioned boy, who was an edger to appear in the world much earlier than supposed. It's because of that, the man hated his son.
Throughout the past time, he didn't receive any gratulations related to Henry's birth, but only condolences. There was no baby shower, any celebration, but only a funeral. The man learned to despise an innocent child, who in his eyes wasn't innocent at all.
Looking at the cozily sleeping figure of his son in the one of hospital's bassinets he didn't feel love, nor the urge of taking care of him. It was his fault, the man growled to himself. He killed his mother! At that point, the man understood one, while snarling just over the little body. He never wanted to see him again, he raised himself confidently over him. Like he never, ever existed.
