YEAR 849 - Shiganshina District

It was cold.

He had to deal with it a lot- that sinking, freezing feeling that would creep up on his bones and chill him to the core.

Another thing about the cold is that it was harder to find food. In the cold, there was a lot of snow. A lot of snow meant a lot of dark skies, which meant little sunlight. Little sunlight meant less plant growth.

The lake where he went to get water would also freeze up, and he'd have to use his spear to break the ice and place it in a dented metal bucket he found. After, he'd have to make a fire and melt the ice.

But the snow always interfered with his fire. It took multiple tries to get the fire started, and even longer to get it to become a burning blaze rather than a smouldering spark.

But it was always there.

It, referring to the titan that came to him whenever it became cold.

Colt didn't know how exactly their relationship started. All he knew was that he had felt cold, hungry, and tired. He had been so tired.

He had felt his eyes start to close as he lost consciousness, the freezing temperature numbing him.

But then something wrapped around him. Something hairy and slightly ticklish, but warm.

And Colt had drifted off to sleep.

After that winter, it didn't come back for a while. Colt had thought that it left for good, but the next winter, it came back.

It had scared Colt at first, but then he remembered that it had not hurt him. Rather, it had helped him.

And it was the same titan he had seen on the day the walls fell. The one that had put him in the cave and had protected him.

So, he trusted it, no matter how much of a terrible decision that might be.

It was a routine now. During winter, it would come and take care of Colt. It would find him food, keep him warm, provide him with water, and most importantly, protect him from the titans. It had a roar that commanded respect, and it always stopped the titans. Colt had been in awe the first time he had seen it, but it didn't need to use it a lot. In winter, the titans were like the animals Colt saw in his picture books- because they hibernated. It seemed that they got their energy from any source of light, so they 'slept' whenever it was dark. The snow also buried them.

It had come back with clothes 2 years ago as well. They didn't fit Colt as well as before, but they kept him warm whenever it wasn't there, so he didn't complain.

It was also a brilliant listener. It never spoke, but it was always content to listen to Colt talk. It was why Colt called it it- there was no name for him to use. He could use Monkey since the titan reminded him of one, but it had looked annoyed and disgruntled when Colt had used that name. However, when Colt asked for a more accurate name, it still hadn't said anything.

Even with an unbiased audience, Colt didn't talk about much. There just wasn't much to talk about. The only interesting thing he could talk about was his past.

His pretty mother, his hard-working father, sweet Falco... and lovable, amazing Porco.

He missed Porco a lot whenever it was just him and his thoughts.

It always seemed interested to hear Colt speak about Porco. Maybe there was something in his tone that it could hear, but Colt didn't know.
