It was a seemingly peaceful afternoon. Izzy was spending the day at the Lightfoot's home, playing video games and watching funny dragon videos with Barley. Ian joined in too of course but he was mostly scrolling around on his phone. Laurel was out working in the garden and Colt was still at work, they had a few small chores to do but not a whole lot. As Barley and Izzy focused on a game they were playing, Ian went to take out the trash. It was a simple and quick task or so it would be most days.
The elf had no idea there was a unicorn out there, usually it can be easy to simply chase them away but this one seemed a lot more agitated. It was snooping through the trash, trying desperately to find something. The lawns were all mowed down so low it was hard to get a proper mouthful of grass. This unicorn seemed desperate to get at least something in its belly. "Ugh...gross. Hey go away! Shoo!" Ian said as he tried waving his hands at the large white beast. Her mane was a little bit messy, dirt was stained on her hooves but she didn't look as ratty as the others. She did however look very angry as Ian took a step closer. The elf started to hesitate a bit, they can be stubborn but there was a certain look in her eye. That is when Ian saw it, a little foal next to her. He knew why she looked so angry and why she seemed so desperate to go snooping through his trash. "O-oh! Umm...! I-I'm sorry! I didn't see you there...I will just...back away slowly and-"
The unicorn angrily stomped her front hooves on the ground, she looked ready to attack Ian. Startled, Ian fell to the ground and was laying there vulnerable. If he made any sudden moves he is dead but the longer he stays the sooner he is going to get struck by those hooves. Suddenly Izzy came out the door, the youngest Lightfoot was shocked to see how she was right beside him all of a sudden. "Shhhh....shhhh......it's ok...." she said with a whisper, she had a carrot in her hand, the unicorn still looked a bit unsure but she can smell that it was food. Her attention drifted away from Ian for a bit, slowly leaning in and sniffing at the carrot. Soon she was distracted enough for Ian to slowly crawl up and get away. "It's ok, I'm not going to hurt you or your beautiful baby....I promise." She said in a whisper. "This is a carrot, it's good. Most unicorns tend to really love them and they are also very good for your eyes. I'm sure this will help you with producing more nutritious milk." She sounded so gentle and tender as she said this. Barley was out the door and he helped his brother up, they both stared at the imp and her new friends in awe. The unicorn began to munch on the carrot. "There we go!"
A big smile appeared on Barley's face as he watched, he felt extremely proud of his girlfriend. Ian looked stunned, the adrenaline was still rushing through his veins from the scare. However the two gasped a bit as they saw the foal wonder closer to Izzy. They began to panic knowing that the closer the foal was, the angrier the mother would become. However Izzy remained perfectly calm, she was actually pretty excited to see the cute little baby sniff at her arm. "Awww, hello." She said, her smile was insanely huge but she still made sure to keep her voice down so she doesn't scare them. The elf brothers expected for the mother to freak out but she actually remained calm. The foal's tiny snoot lightly pressed against Izzy's arm, it took a step back after it made contact, curious but cautious. Izzy giggles a little. The mother unicorn sniffles her hand for a moment to see if there was anything else she can eat, she gave it a little lick as well before wondering off, her foal happily trotting after her along the way.
Ian and Barley both stood there with their jaws hung wide open. The imp happily waved at the two unicorns who seemed really docile all of a sudden. "See ya later! I hope your little one grows up to be nice and healthy!"
While Ian was still a bit shocked from earlier, Barley was overwhelmed with excitement. He happily ran over to Izzy as his brother tried his best not to pass out. "Izzy! That was amazing!" He said, grinning ear to ear.
Izzy was a little surprised by his reaction, she began to blush a little bit by the sudden praise. "Oh uh- really?" She asked, she seemed very casual about it but Barley was just beside himself. Taming animals like this was a normal everyday thing for Izzy but a skill like that has never been seen by Barley or Ian. It was a rare ability and a special one at that.
"You kidding?! To have such a special bond with the wilderness is a rare and beautiful blessing! Not many have this sort of power you know? Who would've thought, not only is my brother a wizard but my girlfriend is a whisperer!" Barley was practically bouncing up and down with excitement. He always did know she had a way with animals and has suspected many times she may be of royal decent because of it. Many princesses have a natural connection with nature according to the days of old so that is what he assumed the very first time he met her. But this was beyond anything he has seen her do. He only ever heard of folk from generations ago ever accomplishing such a thing, to be able to witness it with his own eyes was extraordinary.
Izzy smiles shyly, she didn't think that much of her skills when it comes to animals. She just assumed all of them were misunderstood and capable of loving anyone and everyone. "Ah, well it's easy really. You just got to talk in a nice gentle voice. If you talk too loudly that can startle them. Then you got to move nice and slow too, sudden movements is always scary too. If you offer them food they can grow fond of you pretty quickly, it's the fastest way to earn an animal's trust." Izzy said casually, those are the steps she usually follows and they work almost every single time.
Although the elf believed there was more to it than simple steps such as that. According to his studies, everyone has a certain aura to them only animals can pick up on. "Hah! Look at you being all modest! So cute. Everyone knows that any great beast is able to detect if one is worthy of their trust or not! Clearly you just got that special ancient connection with them!"
Izzy began to think about it for a bit. She wouldn't go far as saying it was a gift similar to what Ian may have but rather just a simple skill and her ability to be kind to others. "Hmmm...well my mother did always say that animals can pick up if someone is bad or not."
"Exactly!" Barley says with an eager grin. "And not only that but with your taming skills you saved my baby bro!" Feeling grateful, Barley scooped Izzy up and gave her a big cuddle, making her squeak at first before giggling sweetly. He began to shower her face with lots of little kisses next. "How can I ever repay you for that?"
Izzy blushes, she couldn't help but wag her tail a bit as he gently kisses her over and over again. "Haha! Hey! I'd say you're already repaying me for it now! Although, not that you have to. He is gonna be my bro in law someday y'know?"
Barley blushes and a big grin appeared on his face, he happily kept cuddling Izzy. "What- guys you've have only been together for a few months! Give it some time." Ian says, he didn't want them to rush into things and get married.
"Don't worry, Ian. We are taking things slow but you're gonna have to accept at some point in the future we are getting hitched!" Barley said, he sounded so proud as he said this, he was dead certain they would get married. He believed this relationship will last a lifetime and longer.
Ian lightly rolls his eyes, he was happy for them but at the same time he can't help but worry for them sometimes. "Boy, you're really thinking far ahead..." he says to himself awkwardly.
Barley looks back at his adorable little imp, smiling proudly at her as he did. "Now then, you ready to head on in and celebrate our mighty victory against the fierce and quite possibly man eating unicorn?" Barley asked.
Izzy looks at her handsome big elf, she shook her head a little. "She wasn't fierce or anything, she was just trying to make sure her baby is safe that's all. But...I am a bit worried. You don't think they will get hurt do you?" Izzy asks, she looks off in the direction the unicorn and her baby wondered off.
"We can always leave out some hay for them tonight in case they come back. Unicorns are smart creatures! Surely they will find their way back to the forests where there will be plenty to eat." Barley stated.
Izzy still looked a bit worried, sometimes the unicorns end up wondering the suburban area but since it's so big and vastly different to what they are used too, they tend to get lost easily and struggle to find the way out. Not only that but this place was built in what was once a sanctuary for unicorns, what started as a peaceful village that lived in harmony with them escalated into a huge suburban area which forced the unicorns to adapt to the changes around them. This is why we tend to see some rather unhealthy looking ones that eat from the trash. They have become a pest to most now but Izzy still believes they mean no harm whatsoever.
"Yeah, I think we should leave some hay out and maybe a nice big bucket full of water." Izzy says, she wished the best for the mother and foal.
