chapter three: the sparring partner
The next few days at school went the same as the first. You tried to keep a low profile but everyone in your class always tried to make that as difficult as possible. However, you do begin to grow welcome to it as you feel more comfortable in the class as the days go by. Besides, you can't really say that you don't like their friendships. They're all super nice after all.
After classes one day, you head to the gym to practice some of the things you've learned already. While you're at the water fountain filling up your bottle, Todoroki walks in.
"Hi," he says as he draws near, causing you to smile back at him.
"Are you trying to get some extra practice to beat me one of these days?" you tease.
Todoroki laughs. "Actually, I could use a sparring partner if you'd be interested."
"That sounds like a challenge," you hum.
"We could start now if you'd like," he offers, making the deal almost impossible to resist.
"How could I say no to that?" you grin, grabbing your water and walking outside the gym to a small sparring field with your partner.
You place down your water and turn around to face him, but see that you're already blocked in by four giant walls of fire. You extend your arms out to the side and begin to suck the fire in towards you. With quite a bit of concentration, you're able to turn the fire into stronger arms of lightning that you blast outwards. However, Todoroki's able to protect himself with a wall of ice that isn't thick enough to prevent you from breaking it.
You then charge at him and go to punch him right in the gut, but he blocks you once again with an icy fist. Your fighting goes on for a while only to end with both of you being too tired to continue. In the end, you decide to call a truce.
"I'm too tired to continue," you sight as you sit down on a nearby bench.
"That's okay, I am, too," he replies as he sits beside you. "How are you liking school so far, by the way?"
"It's fine," you shrug. "School just isn't really my thing."
"Really? But you're so smart. I can see in your notes that you practically know everything before Mr. Aizawa even finishes his sentence. I know it's none of my business, but why don't you ever say anything in class?"
You look at him in silence for a moment, not pissed that he stares down at your notes but surprised that he's so perceptive. You definitely weren't expecting that from him.
"I don't need to cause a bigger attraction to myself than I already do," you sigh, not thinking he'd understand what you mean.
"I get that," he nods to himself. "I feel that way a lot. My dad's a pro-hero and there's a lot of pressure on me to be just like him..."
You smile, happy that you've found a friend you can relate to.
"Hey, maybe you could help me study sometime," he changes the conversation.
"You want to spar and study?" you laugh. "Isn't that asking a lot for someone you just met a week ago?"
"We don't have to-"
"No, no, I'd like to," you interrupt. "It'll help me, too."
"Great, tomorrow after class then. We can meet at my dorm."
The next evening you knock on the door of Todoroki's dorm. He opens it with a soft smile and welcomes you in. You're quite glad that he's invited you to his dorm because you were a bit worried about what would happen if your boyfriend walked in on you with Todoroki there. He can be a bit jealous at times...
As you sit on the ground across from Todoroki in his beautifully made room, you pull out your notebook and textbook from your backpack.
"We just had a test before you started coming to class so everything you already learned in class is on the next test," he tells you.
"Okay," you nod as you flip through the pages of your book. "We can start with the first day then."
The two of you study together until it becomes dark outside. You have to admit, spending your time with Todoroki is quite fun. Even though you were studying, you found yourself smiling and laughing more than you ever have in as long as you can remember. For a good amount of time you almost forgot about everything else in the world while you were sitting there with him.
After time passes, Todoroki turns to a small refrigerator in his room and offers you a soda. With a smile, you accept the drink that he opens and carefully passes to you. You notice the kindness in his dual-colored eyes as time seems to stop the second your fingers touch the cold can. But the moment fades when you realize just what you're beginning to get yourself into. Todorki notices, too, and decides to kick up a conversation to avoid the awkward tension after the moment you just shared.
"So what made you come to UA halfway through the year if you don't like school?" he asks.
"There are some important people that want me to be here so I can't really say no," you shrug, not really having a good answer for him.
Todoroki's about to say something more when there's a knock on the door. He quickly excuses himself and walks around you to answer it. When he opens the door you see the easily distinguishable haircuts that belong to Midoriya and Kirishima.
"You busy?" Kisirhima asks. "Wanna hang out for a bit?"
Todoroki looks back at you before turning to them and apologizing. "Sorry guys but I'm kinda busy right now. Maybe later?"
Midoriya and Kirishima, now noticing you sitting in the middle of Todoroki's room, look at you with extreme shock as though you had just electrocuted them. And when you wave to reduce some tension, they wave back almost in slow motion.
"What's going on there?" Midoriya whispers, hoping you won't hear him. However, he's a pretty crappy whisperer.
"You know she's got a boyfriend, right?" Kirishima adds, suffering from the same condition as Midoriya.
"We're just friends," Todoroki shrugs, seeing nothing wrong with you begin here. "It's alright."
"Okay, well we'll go then. Have fun," Kirishima smiles before departing.
After they leave, Todoroki closes the door and turns back to you. "What were we talking about again?" he asks.
"Um, I've got to go," you mutter as you stand up. "It's getting late and my, uh, boyfriend is probably wondering where I am."
"Okay," he nods nonchalantly. "Tomorrow then?"
"Yeah, of course," you reply as you quickly gather your things and make your way to the door. "See you tomorrow!"
