chapter seven: the arrangement
For the next few days, you're able to go without speaking to Todoroki on your own. However, it is now the day of your practical exam- and your match against him- and you're walking down to the arena with Jirou and Bakugou on either of your sides.
"Just do your best and whatever happens, happens," Jirou says as she does her best to comfort you.
"Yeah. Your parents might kill you afterwards but I'd still like to see you pummel Icyhot into next week," Bakugou adds, helpful as ever. You and Jirou look at each other and roll your eyes at his comment. The three of you then enter the waiting room where the rest of your class is with Aizawa.
"Good luck to you all," he says as he places a piece of paper down on a table in the center of the room. "You can watch the matches from the television in the room and the lineup is on the table."
With that he quietly takes his leave, avoiding any stupid questions your classmates have to ask and leaving you all to figure out anything else on your own. However, not many waste much time before scrambling over to the table to take a look at the list. And when you get a hold of it, you see that you've got the last spot. You suppose the school wanted to save 'the best for last' as Principal Nezu would probably say.
As the matches begin, you spend the entire time worrying over what you're going to do. You really want to fight and it would be super cool to be recognized by an agency. You're already becoming a hero by attending the best university in the country and have had publicity already. However, you don't know what your parents will do with you if you decide to go through with this, but what else can you do? Forfeit? No way!
With just a few matches left before your own, you leave the room and walk outside to get a bit of fresh air. You sit down against the arena wall and squeeze your legs up to your chest. About a minute later you hear rustling beside you. You look up from your spot of staring a hole into your kneecaps and look over to see Todoroki sitting beside you.
"We shouldn't be alone together right now," you whisper, not really wanting to say what you think needs to be said.
"Y/N, I've had feelings for you since the first week of school," he begins to admit despite what you've just said to push him away.
"Todoroki..."
"You're so strong, Y/N. You're incredibly smart and you're beautiful. You deserve to be with someone who acknowledges that," he continues.
"We already talked about this. I have an arrangement with Rai's parents," you sigh.
"You shouldn't have to worry about that. If you want to be here you should be here because you want to, not because they want you to be. You should do what makes you happy."
You smile sadly at him, not really knowing just what to say. However, you do know now that you do want to be at school here and you do want to go through with the fight. All of your friends are right and you finally have made up your mind. Besides, you can't deny how your heart skipped when Todoroki subtly mentioned his intentions of being with you.
"Just think about it and let me know what you think once you've made up your mind," he tells you as he stands up to leave.
He then holds out his hand to you, offering to help you up. With a smile painted across your lips, you accept it. "I've definitely made up my mind now," you admit. "Besides, Bakugou's expecting me to beat you into next week."
"I guess you're ready then," he grins ever so slightly.
"As I'll ever be."
It's then in a blink of an eye that you're standing across from Todoroki in the corner of the arena. This time you don't let him have the first move as you instead shoot a bolt of lightning straight toward him. However, he's quick to destroy it with ice. You then smile as you charge towards him, ready to have fun finally sparring with him once again.
Your fight lasts for a while but it's filled with cheers and screaming from the audience the entire time. They were kept on their toes throughout the match and you're pretty sure some of them lost their minds.
In the end, with a bolt to the front of his neck just close enough that the crackling electricity tickles his skin, Todoroki drops to his knees and gives in. The crowd goes absolutely insane at your victory and even more so when your opponent stands up, grabs your hand, and proudly lifts it high in the air.
"That was fun," you beam as you look out across the roaring audience.
"It was and I still plan on beating you one of these days," he smiles back.
Afterwards, as the crowd heads down from their seats, you shake plenty of heroes' hands that you never even thought would ever have an interest in you of all people. But it is when you find Endeavor's humongous frame heading in your direction that you fear you might genuinely lose your bladder.
"You've got the makings of a top pro hero when you grow up," he remarks with a slight grin tugging on his lips.
"Thank you, sir, but Todoroki didn't need need to ask you to say-"
"My son hasn't said anything to me about your match yet. I'm still on my way to see him. However, there is something I'd like to ask you, Y/N," he admits.
"Anything," you reply, holding in how scared pissless you're becoming.
"I'd like you to work at my agency during your internship. That is, when it begins. Do you think you could do me that honor?" he proudly asks.
Your jaw drops straight to the ground and you find yourself stunned, having absolutely no idea what to say to him. However, just then, someone behind you clears their throat. You turn around to see your angered mother standing right behind you.
"My apologies, Mr. Endeavor. However, Y/N will not be joining anything because as of right now she is no longer a student at UA," she snaps quite rudely to the pro hero.
"Oh?" Aizawa hums, coming from out of absolutely nowhere. "Is that true, Y/N?"
"Umm," you reply, not really knowing what stance to take. If your mother is removing you from school how could you possibly afford it yourself?
"Do you want to drop out?" he continues to press.
"No, not really," you answer truthfully.
"Then since it is your intention to stay, you may do so. Ma'am, I'm not really seeing what the problem is here," he then adds, turning his attention to your mother.
"She's got no funds to stay. I won't endorse her being here and since she came under certain circumstances I'm afraid without paying there's just no room for her to continue," she proudly huffs.
"I don't have a problem keeping her in my classes," Aizawa continues. "She may stay on her own merits as far as I'm concerned."
"And I'd be happy to pay for anything that needs to be taken care of. She has already promised herself to be part of my future staff and I'd like her to be trained as best as she possibly can," Endeavor adds.
You're so beyond grateful for the two of them, especially as your mother stomps away in a huff. Finally, now you can live your life in the way you want, not what your parents want for you, and man does it feel so good!
