chapter eleven: the ice cream
That same night after the two of you spend a bit of time alone, Todoroki takes you by the hand and leads you back off campus.
"What's the rush?" you ask, giggling as you watch his face turn serious as he walks.
"I just don't want to wait any longer," he admits, slowing down for you once he realizes how fast he'd been walking. "I've been waiting for a month to take you out so I'm just a bit excited. I'm sorry for making you feel like I'm rushing."
"No, it's okay," you smile as he speaks since his answer was so genuinely sweet. "Where are we going anyway?"
"For ice cream," he replies a bit quieter, as though his nerves are beginning to set in.
"Are any ice cream places open this later?" you wonder aloud.
"I know one that's open twenty-four/seven. I heard Bakugou come back in the middle of the night with some after he lost his match to Midoriya last week," he replies calmly, as though it wasn't funny at all. However, you do begin to laugh just a little thinking about the sight of Bakugou caught by Todoroki sneaking back with pity ice cream.
Soon, the two of you arrive at a small park not too far from campus. You've got Todoroki's hand in yours and you can tell by the way he starts to squeeze your hand just a little bit tighter that he's feeling slightly tense.
"Are you alright?" you ask him.
Todoroki sighs and stops walking to face you. "I did mean what I said before. I don't want to mess things up before they even get started."
With a soft smile, you squeeze his hand back. "You could never. I'm so thankful for everything you've done for me and I'm glad that I can be with you."
Todoroki nods and plants a kiss on your cheek. "Thank you. Now let's go get our ice cream."
Not too far away you find a truck parked on the sidewalk with lights still surrounding it. Todoroki was right, it is opened around the clock! You didn't think you'd be this excited about ice cream, but as your favorite flavor sits right in your hand you can't help but burst with joy.
The two of you then find a spot to sit down at a nearby bench and enjoy the cold treat. However, because it is the middle of the night, you begin to feel a slight chill. You don't mind it, though. It's worth sitting there with him at your side and one of your favorite things in your hand.
Once Todoroki is finished with his ice cream, he places his arm around your shoulders. "You look cold," he notices. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," you reply. "Just a bit cold, that's all."
"Let's head back then, okay?"
"Sure. I'm ready to go."
When the two of you finish your walk back to campus and open the door to your dorm, Mina bolts in your direction and lets out a sigh of relief as she pulls you into one of the tightest hugs you've ever been a part of.
"We were so worried about you two! Where did you go?" she cries.
"I'm so sorry," you apologize as you realize what you failed to do. "I completely forgot to tell everyone that we both left early."
"See, I told you there was nothing to worry about," Jirou grins as she nudges Bakugou in the arm.
"I knew that! I'm not stupid, dammit!" Bakugou retorts as he wipes his arm clean, causing Kirishima to pat him on the back to calm him down. Jirou rolls her eyes as she smiles over at you, just happy that you are safe.
"Where did you guys go?" Uraraka then asks.
"Out. On a date," you grin. "Perhaps a few others in this room will realize their feelings too and do the same since it's quite obvious."
A few members of the room take a moment to awkwardly stare at each other before looking away in a fluster.
"Hey, Bakugou," you call out to him as the group begins to disassemble. "That was a good place for ice cream!"
Bakugou glances over at Kirishima for a moment before narrowing his eyes at you. However, you keep the smile running across your lips as you hand him a coupon for two free ice creams from the truck before waving and saying goodnight.
You and Todoroki then head up to your room. You're no longer in fear that Rai will come barging in to ruin your night. You then hop right into bed with him at your side. He brings you in close, holding you tight as you allow your head to rest against his warm chest.
"Thanks for the ice cream," you whisper in the silent room.
"I had fun, too," he replies. "I'd love to do it again sometime."
You feel your heart flutter as a smile creeps upon your lips and you soon fall fast asleep with that same smile still painted on your face.
