Hyun Ji's POV

"Jess!" my mum yelled from downstairs, "You gotta get out of bed, honey. It's 11:00!"

I groaned as I rolled over to the other side of my bed. I had been up all night crying about the fact that I could have not given two fucks about the exams, failed them and I would be in the same position I am right now.

I burrowed back under my tears-filled sheets, organized my thoughts and groggily made my way out of my bed.

When I looked in the mirror, I gasped in horror as I saw how swollen my eyes were. I quickly brushed my teeth, washed my face, and applied some makeup so I could look decent.

I went back to my room and picked out an outfit; a grey crop top with some capri black leggings along with a pair of Nike running shoes. I tied my hair into a quick messy ponytail because I was in no mood to put that much effort into my hair. After looking into my body mirror for one last check, I rushed downstairs.

I was greeted by the smell of eggs, bacon and waffles, a classic American breakfast.

Really mum? You think she would make a Korean meal to make up for last night, but nope.

"Sit down for breakfast dear," my mum said casually as if nothing happened yesterday.

I played along and smiled, "Actually, I already made plans to have breakfast with a friend, bye."

I grabbed my purse and phone and headed out the door.

I picked up my phone and dialed Katherine, a very close friend of mine.

We met in elementary school and practically became sisters. We stuck by each other all throughout middle and high school. She usually picked up in less than 3 rings so as expected, I heard her voice on the second ring.

"Yoboseyo?"

I laughed softly. She was French but only spoke English, but since we were so close, my Korean-ness rubbed off onto her and she began saying Korean phrases as well.

"How are you my chingu? Do you want to hang out?"

"Sure, but where?"

"Come to the park near my house, I'm making my way there now."

"Arasseo."

I turned the corner and arrived at the park. It was simple. A playground. A trail into the woods. Some benches. It was nothing special but I liked it since no one came here often and it was usually quiet.

Once I arrived, I sat down on a swing and swung for a bit until Katherine arrived.

"Hyun Ji!" I heard from a distance.

I looked up to see Katherine running to me. After last night, I realized how blessed I was to have a friend like her.

I sprinted towards her and pulled her into a hug.

"Hey!" she laughed, "what's this about?"

I hugged her tighter, "I'm just so grateful to have you in my life."

Katherine let go of the hug and looked at my face, "Hey, what's wrong? Did something happen?"

I nodded.

She dragged me to a nearby bench and said, "Alright. Go. Tell me what happen. Who's ass do I have to kick?"

"I'll tell you, but I don't think you can kick this person's ass," I chuckled.

"Why? Are they stronger than me? You think I can't do it? You do remember I'm a black belt in karate right?" She stood up and did a few karate punches and kicks to refresh my memory.

I laughed, "Because that person is my mom."

"Oh," she replied quietly.

"Idiot."

"Anyways, tell me what happened."

I let it all out, not caring whether it made sense or not. It felt so good to not have to keep it in and have someone listen to me.

When I was finished, she pulled me into a hug and rubbed my back to sooth down my tears.

"It's gonna be alright," she comforted. She kept saying that over and over until my tears stopped coming.

When it did, Katherine told me, "Hey since my brother is out of the state for college, we have an extra room. If you ever need anything, you can always come to my place okay?"

I thanked her and wiped my tears.

"Let's go get boba," I suggested.

Katherine nodded in agreement.

Just then, her phone rang.

"Hello?" she answered.

After a couple of minutes, she turned to me.

"Sorry, I gotta go. Nick told me to meet him and it sounded urgent. Maybe next time? I'm sorry," she apologized.

"Ah yes, the boyfriend beckons," I said bitterly but sarcastically, "It's fine. Just go. It's the least I should do for making you listen to my rant."

Katherine started walking away, "Sorry."

"It's okay," I replied.

When she was completely out of sight, I went back to the swings and sat on it.

I was just about to start swinging again but out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a familiar face.

I got off the swing and paced towards that person because I didn't want to call someone out and they weren't even the person I thought they were.

The distance between that person and I became smaller and smaller.

When we crossed paths, I yelled, "Oh my gosh. HEY! KIM TAEHYUNG! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN??"

"Hyun Ji??" he said in bewilderment.

I grabbed his neck and ruffled his hair.

"Dude, what was that for?" he said as he fixed his hair.

"All the times you used to mess with me when we were little."

"Ah, sorry."

"Oh my, it's been 8-9 years right? You still look the same! What have you been up to?" I asked him.

Taehyung rubbed the back of his neck nervously, "Well I'm not sure if I'm supposed to tell you or not."

I slapped his arm playfully, "Yo! We've known each other since we were in diapers and grew up with each other until I had to move here. What could you possibly have to keep a secret from me?"

"Wait, do you have a girlfriend?" I teased, a sly grin forming on my face.

The question caught him by surprise. "No!!" he yelled back.

"If that's not it, tell me what it is!" I whined.

"But-" he rejected.

"Please!"

Taehyung gave in to me at this point, "Okay, come with me."

He then grabbed my arm and pulled me in a different direction. Where were we going? I didn't know.

"Kim Taehyung! Are you kidnapping me? Where are we going?" I asked.

Taehyung chuckled as if it amused him, "You'll see."
