Hae Young's POV
Chanwoo handed me the box with a sullen expression.
Cautiously, I unraveled the wrapping paper and lifted the lid.
There was a small portrait of a girl on a white canvas. She sat by a windowsill reading a book, her hand tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. The background showed a sunset casting its rays upon her. She was portrayed as a very beautiful girl. She was, me.
Along with that, there were letters, a lot- maybe 20-25, the letters he wrote to me but never sent.
"Chanwoo I-"
I paused. I didn't know what I was feeling. There was the rush. My mind went blank. The world went black for a moment. Could it have been regret? Sympathy? Or perhaps.. love?
"Chanwoo I don't know what to say. As a matter of fact, I don't even know what I feel right now," I said.
He stuffed his hands into his pocket and still avoided my eyes but opened his mouth to speak, "So I'm guessing you don't have an answer to my question yet."
I bit my lip, thinking hard. I was torn. Both guys were really special to me in different ways.
I let silence linger in the air for a while.
Chanwoo began to get up to leave, but I spat out, "Actually, I do have an answer."
That caught his attention. He jerked around to look at me, his eyes anxiously waiting for the next few words I was gonna say.
I took a deep breath, "Just like you said, I hope whatever I say doesn't change anything between us, but I-I'm sorry. I can't accept your feelings. My heart is already set on someone else. I'm so sorry. I still love you dearly, but not in the way you want me to. I'm sorry..."
"I-I see..." he muttered depressingly.
"Chanwoo. Don't keep thinking about me. Don't waste your time on me. Find someone better than me. Someone that can love you the way you want her to.. please."
He let out a quiet breath, "Can I have one last hug at least?"
I nodded.
Chanwoo took his hands out of his pockets and wrapped them around my body. My arms slowly made their way around his body and intertwined when they met.
He squeezed me tighter and finally let go and placed his hands on my shoulders.
We looked at each others' faces.
His eyes were bloodshot but he manage to form a slight smile on his face.
"Alright. I will do that. I'm gonna move on from you. I'm gonna find someone else. I'm gonna throw away my feelings for you."
With that, he patted my head and walked down the patio steps and out onto the street.
"Wait where are you going?" I asked.
"Home," he replied simply.
"You don't live here anymore?"
"No, I wanted to move out but I still wanted to help grandma and grandpa so I live a couple blocks away."
He pointed at a street sign a few blocks down, "You see that street? My house is the first one on the right."
"Ah I see.. Well, see you tomorrow."
Chanwoo let out a forced smile, "Sure."
