At first he told himself he was just protecting her. She had people trying to track her down and she was too young to truly look after herself. Then it was because she made good company. Then it was because he loved her.

With everything in him Ikaris loved his daughter.

He had done everything for her, to keep her alive. His hands had been stained red, his heart heavy with guilt. He had faced Ajak's judgment and when she followed suit, he faced Arishem's rage,  all for her.

Ikaris was soldier who had given himself a new mission. A new purpose. All for his little soldier.

He was scared.

Terrified.

There was no universe, no world, no life time that he could live and know that his daughter wasn't alive. That her heart wasn't beating.

The lengths he would go to keep her alive, to keep her breathing knew no bounds, no limits. He would destroy a thousand worlds, a million suns just to keep her.

And she knew this.

Ajak knew this.

And yet she still told him.

Told the one thing he never wanted him to know.

An ultimatum.

But was it really an ultimatum when they both knew who Ikaris would choose. Who he would the universe burn into nothingness for.

Because Ikaris refused to let it happen refused to let his worst fear come true—

"Your hearts are tethered," Ajak mumbled over a cup of tea one night.

"Are they?" He drew his gaze away from Imelda silently watching the stars to look at her

"You'll know when her's breaks," she looked up at him her eyes sad but knowing, "and it will kill you. If that's not love I don't know what is."

I'll know if it breaks.

I'll know.

The last deviant in the commune had fallen beneath Sersi's sudden burst of power. A tree in the middle of the water bed and as she climbed out Ikaris felt something in him shatter.
