We were all put into separate holding cells, each next to the other. Umeko whistled for a bit before one of the officers told her to stop. It was cold and uncomfortable, but there was nothing either of us could do. They took my bag once we got to the station, and it sat somewhere out of sight. I thought about all the things that Devland said. Could they really be true? Was I just going crazy? Whether that thing was really a demon or not, it was real and dangerous. I was horribly worried about what might happen when Devland did finish his program.
"What do you think that thing was?" Asked Keiji. Nobody answered for a while, all of us too unnerved to speak
"At Devlands he told me about that email. It was some crazy end of the world tale about demons. And i'm sure you've both heard about that girl who was murdered next to the hospital-" I said.
"So you're saying it was a demon??" Umeko asked. Again nobody answered for a moment.
"That's the idea." I said grimly. Once again, it was uncomfortably silent.
"But there was some program in the email that he had me download. It's supposed to let me speak to and summon demons. So if we get out of here I can use that, if it's not just a hoax." I said.
"When. Not if. We didn't do anything wrong so they'll investigate and find that soon." Keiji said. "So we'll just have to wait until that happens."
Umeko groaned. She often got in trouble at school, and if the police were any similar they might not get out at all. She knew things like this often weren't fair, but Keiji was right in the fact that all we could do is wait this out. It was both boring and stressful, which made things seem so much longer. We were there for hours, and all of us grew bitter while waiting.
"I hate unfairness-" Umeko broke the silence. "The only reason they have the power to boss us around is because someone stronger gave them guns and authority over us. We could have won in a fight with all of them. Their power is arbitrary." She said.
"Why does it matter who's strongest? People in the right shouldn't be punished." Keiji said. I didn't want to argue about this.
"What even makes someone in the right? That man who attacked us might see himself as right because we lied to him, and the thing that killed him probably sees itself as right because it was hungry or something." Umeko said.
"But those actions caused more harm to others than good to themselves, so-" Keiji was interrupted by a scream we all heard from outside. We all went silent for a moment, listening intently. An officer ran into the room with our cells, his face was one of pure horror. He looked at all three of us, checking we were still there, and then he ran out again. We all were confused, and a worry fell over me. There seemed to be a loud noise outside. The building was shaking. Something terrible was happening outside.
