The Last Guardian pt. 1

I walked the cobblestone path, a small girl leading me through winding streets and eventually over to a large fountain, silver outlined with a tread of gold. I ran my hand over it as she giggled and poked my arm, making me look at her, "What? Can't I be human too?" I asked gently and she shook her head, "well why not?"

"You're an elf, you can't be," she argued back and I nodded.

"Touché, my lady, but as are you," I countered as she placed her small hands delicately over her pointed ears and giggled yet again. She begins to run around the fountain and over to a stall, which contains apples. I sigh, watching as she waved to the woman behind the stall counter, "Morning." I waved and she stopped smiling and watched me slowly.

"They just don't know you, not like I do at least!" She smiled at me, yet I frowned.

"I suppose, but you'd think they'd treat the guardian of their only heir and would be grateful, though they do not seem very grateful," I spoke and suddenly retracted my comment, "do not read into that, they're just humans," I spoke and walked side-by-side with her as she skipped and looked around, my hand always on my sword hilt.

"They're just big meanies!" She spoke suddenly and gasps were heard as we paused. "Always so mean to the guardians!" She yelled, clearly making a point partially known.

"Mistress," I spoke, warning in my tone, "do not draw attention to yourself like this," I spoke and people scoffed.

"Be nicer to them! Or... or...," a male with black hair cut her off.

"Or what? Bitch," he went to hit her as my sword suddenly reached his throat.

"Do it, and you and your entire family is dead and exiled, but mostly dead," I snarled and he took a step back, startled. I placed the sword back into its holster and watched the rest of the people as I followed the Princess without order, and we made our way back to the castle, where an expecting king and queen stood. I stopped on the edge of the draw bridge, and stayed put. I, the guardians, we're not permitted in the castle.

"Can he come too?" Asked Islle, my assigned child, asked softly as she met my eyes, but I looked away.

I met the queen's gaze as she watched me for a moment, "no, he.... he umm," she looked to the King, sweat dripping from her face as she shook her head, "no," she spoke finally.

"Why so worried? Islle was my child, not his," the King laughed.

"Was she though?" Asked a voice from beside me as I turned to face the other guardian, "I heard a rumor that places her as your bastard," I saw the man smirk as I sighed, "so is she?"

"Maybe, maybe not," I spoke in response, crossing my arms over my chest, "why?"

"She is! I knew it!" He jumped upwards, and the boy he was to guard jumped with him, brothers.

My gaze went forward to meet Islle's once more as she waved goodnight to me as I returned it slowly, "What do you think it's like in there?" I asked suddenly and they looked at each other.

"No one knows, we can't go in there, not allowed to, so you coming home with us tonight or no?" Asked Vargas suddenly and I shook my head.

"I can't," was all I said.

"Suit yourself, c'mon bro!" Came Vargas' little brother, Dwear. They left me in the quiet of the night as I sighed.

"Although I have nowhere to go, I can't help but wonder, what would it be like to not be a guardian? To be normal? Not cursed with immortality, and to search for my own soulmate? Not like I can however, my body can't leave this Kingdom, part of my punishment, why did I have to sleep with her?" I spoke aloud and I knew no one was listening, it just felt nice to get off my chest. I turned on my heel and went down an old path, making my way towards a small undergrowth of plants and where there were smallish animals that began approaching me with the want to be held and pet. I kneeled into the water, armor keeping out all of it, as I took off my gauntlets and splashed my face with the cold substance, I sighed in contentment and began petting the small creatures of the wood as they came at me in numbers and waves.
