With their constant loving glances and banter, everyone knew something was there. Everyone except for the two agents who shared those loving glances and continuous banter; they were oblivious.
...
When Nick gets in, she is already at her desk, working away on her case notes from the previous day.
That's what he loved about her. No matter the circumstance, she always got things done. Her determination was admirable. She always inspired him to do better. But he always chickened out when trying to tell her how he felt.
Ellie's head was down. She was doing all her paperwork from the day before, trying to get it in before Gibbs arrived, and said they had another case. But she had other things on her mind.
All she could think about was when she kissed him while undercover.
Well, it was Charlie kissing Luis, right? Or was that just her mind trying to protect her from the truth. Did she really have feelings for Nick, her partner? The confident, annoying agent that sits across the room from her.
She needed to talk with him, clear the air. Ever since they got back from being undercover, it had been awkward. The kiss was haunting her, playing on a constant loop in her head, and the one person she wanted to talk about it with happened to also be the person she kissed. She needed to speak with him.
Before she could even think about getting up to talk to him, Gibbs walked in.
"Grab your gear," he said.
Great, just what she needed another car ride filled with awkward silence with Torres.
The only good thing is that maybe this case would get him off her mind.
...
When they get to the crime scene, Gibbs and McGee aren't there yet. So it's just the two of them. Luckily before they could say one word to each other, the ship's commander walked up to them.
Bishop and Torres show their badges, and he leads them right over to where the body was found.
"One of our seamen found him this morning," he said.
Gibbs and McGee finally arrive and are walking towards where Ellie and Nick are. McGee looks over at Gibbs.
"Is it just me, or have Bishop and Torres barely talked or looked at each other since their undercover operation?"
"It's not just you. Something is definitely going on there." Gibbs responded.
Gibbs and McGee finally get to where Nick and Ellie are standing.
"Okay, Bishop, what do we got?" Gibbs said.
"Lieutenant Jason Comanda, 28, a shot to the head from mid-range. Shipmates say that he was supposed to go home today to see his wife and two kids."
"Okay, Bishop, you and Torres stay here on the ship and gather some intel on why someone would want to kill Lieutenant Comanda."
"McGee, you and I are going to talk to his wife."
Bishop and Nick nod, their faces plastered with a forced smile, knowing that Gibbs put them together on purpose.
It wasn't a secret that it was awkward between them since they came back from being undercover. The once best friends now barely even talked to one another. They didn't go over to each other's desk to talk or mock each other, and when they did, it was only to hand the other papers on the case, and most of the time, it didn't include eye contact.
Gibbs and McGee leave to talk to the wife, leaving Bishop and Nick standing there in silence. The awkward tension between them could be seen by everyone around them.
Great, how is this supposed to get him off her mind and in closer quarters, no less? She thought.
