After the lecture ended, the students began to filter out of the hall, the tension lingering in the air. As they walked through the doors, Ruby rushed toward Stella, her footsteps quick and light. Stella was walking side by side with Frederick, her gaze cast downward, her thoughts still tangled in the mess that had just unfolded.
Ruby caught up to them, she glanced at Frederick, he offered a brief smile and, understanding her unspoken request for privacy, gave a slight nod before stepping back, leaving the two girls alone.
Ruby's eyes were full of concern as she turned to Stella, her voice a mixture of curiosity and worry. "What happened in there? Why were you late?" She paused, her brow furrowing. "And what was up with Jason?"
Stella took a slow breath, her thoughts tangled. She had to say it. She couldn't keep it bottled up anymore, especially not from Ruby. "I kissed Frederick," Stella said, her voice barely a whisper. Her eyes stayed focused on the ground, afraid to meet Ruby's gaze.
"You kissed Frederick?" She asked, her voice rising slightly in disbelief. Her gaze flickered between Stella and where Frederick had gone, confusion written across her face.
Stella looked up at Ruby now, feeling the weight of everything that had been building up. "Jason doesn't know," she replied quietly, her voice almost a whisper.
"I think he reacted like that because of Frederick. He saw us together, late, and I think it triggered something." She bit her lip, her mind swirling.
Ruby found herself feeling a little suspicious. The outburst had seemed off, especially for someone who usually kept his emotions tightly controlled .
Stella didn't fully understand why Jason had reacted that way either. Why did he react like that? It's not like him to blow up over something so small.
She looked up at Ruby, her eyes pleading for understanding. "I just don't know what to think anymore, Ruby. Jason's been consuming my thoughts, and now there's Frederick...It's all just so messy."
Ruby placed a hand on her shoulder, her voice gentle but firm. "Whatever it is, don't let it get to you,"
Stella gave a faint smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. Ruby, sensing the unease, decided to change the subject and lighten the mood a bit. "You can't just leave me hanging like that!" she said, voice turning playful, "was Fred a good kisser?"
Stella laughed nervously, her face flushed. "Ruby, you're impossible," she muttered, but it didn't stop Ruby from grinning.
Ruby smirked. "What? I need to know if he's living up to the hype. But honestly," she leaned in closer and lowered her voice in mock seriousness, "you've had quite the exciting month on campus, haven't you?"
Stella couldn't help but shake her head, half amused, half embarrassed. "You're too much, Ruby."
As they strolled down the hallway toward the dining hall, their laughter mingling with the hum of the campus, Stella felt a fleeting sense of ease wash over her. The weight of the morning's events seemed to lighten with every step they took.
Ruby was talking, her voice light as she shared the latest gossip, but before Stella could reply, a voice interrupted them.
"Ms. Hart?" A campus assistant called, standing a few feet away. "Professor Johnson is expecting you in his office."
Stella's smile faltered, and she looked at Ruby, who raised an eyebrow in silent question. Ruby's expression softened, sensing the change in Stella's mood.
"Did you forget about your meeting with him?" Ruby asked, her voice a little softer now.
Stella shook her head, trying to mask the sudden tightness in her chest. "No...I just wasn't expecting it so soon."
