Shira Pov
I hear the back door shut softly behind Laila, the bane of my existence. I clearly remember the day this all started, just like it was yesterday.
-flash back-
Trigger warning- mention of suicide
*ring* ring *ring*
'Who the hell is calling me'  the number is not one that I recognize but regardless, on the last ring I answer the phone.
"Hello?"
"hello, is this Shira Farentell?" A women's voice comes through the receiver.
"Yes this is, may I ask who is calling?"
"Yes yes , sorry, this is Laura Sheppit the case worker of Laila Spero and im calling to let you know......"
My mind is spinning ..... Case worker?....Laila?..... Who the heck is Laila? Why are they calling me?....... Did i.....
"Ma'am?" The women's voice broke me out of my thoughts
"Did you hear what I just said?" She asked, sounding slightly annoyed.
"Uhhhh yes ... I ... You .. You said you are the case worker of Laila Spero...."
"Yes, and im calling to let you know that her mother, your second cousin, has unfortunately committed suicide a couple weeks ago. Our agency has been unable to locate a suitable relative to adopt her. After doing some research we have chisen your family as the best option for her. We will be dropping her and her things off at your house later on today. Thank you and have a good day!"
"Wait!... What?! .. How?.... " I sputtered uselessly, because I was talking to a dead line.
My husband, Devol, who had overheard the entire conversation looked me in the eye and said
"Maybe this is for the good ... We don't know her so maybe we can raise her to be our maid so you will never need to do any housework again."
I looked at him skeptically and cried
"but I don't even know her at all! I don't want her! Why did they choose us?"
Devol gathered me in his arms and held me close
"This will all be good I promise"
*-timeskip-*
Now I'm standing at the front door staring at a tiny girl, much too small to be six.
'What do I even do with her ' I think to myself
She looked up at me with huge grey eyes, her long curly hair framed her thin face, her clothing was very dirty and she was clutching a light brown bear with a red bow

"hi ma'am" she said in such a tiny voice, I questioned if I was just hearing things. Never the less I said
"Hello child, your room will be in the basement, follow me"
As I led the way downstairs.
