glossary of korean terms

Instead of all the terms at the end of the chapters, I'm going to start putting translations here in latin alphabetical order, just so it's a little simpler.

NOTE: the romanization for the hangeul alphabet is not standardized, so you may see different spellings from different sources. These are just the ones that I use.

This glossary will be constantly updated.

Abeoji: father

Aegiya: baby

Aein: sweetheart

Ahop: nine

Aish: darn; damn it

Ajumma: miss; madam (used only with older women, otherwise can be offensive)

Amado: maybe

Anniyo: no

Annyeonghaseyo/annyeong: hello; hi; goodbye; bye

Appa: dad

Babo-ya: you idiot

Bangabda: nice to meet you

Bungeoppang: fish shaped waffle filled with red bean paste

Byeong-sin saek-ki: motherfucker

Byung-shin: dumbass; asshole

Cheonmaneyo: you're welcome

Dak-cho: shut up

Daseot: five

Dul: two

Eomma/eomeoni: mom; mother

Gamsahamnida/gomawoyo: thank you; thanks

Geonbae: cheers

Ggul-tteok: colorful rice cakes

Gomobu: uncle (literally "father's sister's husband")

Hana: one

Halmeoni: grandmother

Hubae: junior

Hyung: older brother (of a younger male)

-Ie: (a diminutive suffix attached to the end of a name to show a close relationship)

Ilgop: seven

Jagi/jagiya: baby; honey

Jal-ja: good night; sleep well

Jal jasseo: did you sleep well?

Jebal/juseyo: please

Jejeongsin-iya: what the fuck is wrong with you?; what the fuck are you doing?

Jeogiyo: excuse me; pardon (when asking for attention)

Jen-jang: shit

Ji-ral: that's bullshit

Joesonghamnida: I'm sorry (more formal than mianhamnida)

Joeun achim: good morning

Mianhamnida/mianhae/mian: I'm sorry; sorry (less formal than joesonghamnida)

Mi-chin-nyeon: crazy bitch

Museun il-i-ya: what's wrong?

Nae sarang: my love

Ne: yes; okay

Net: four

-Nim: sir; ma'am (honorific added to the end of a name or title to show respect; most often used for people of authority)

Noona: older sister (of a younger male)

Oppa: older brother (of a younger female)

Patbingsu: korean shaved ice

Palli: hurry up

Saranghae: I love you

Set: three

Sillyehamnida: excuse me; pardon (when apologizing; more formal than jeogiyo)

Sshib-saeg-gi: piece of shit

Ssi-bal: fuck

-Ssi: mr.; mrs.; miss (honorific added to the end of a name; less formal than -nim)

Sunbae/sunbaenim: senior (see -nim for information on the honorific used)

Timjang/timjangnim: team leader (see -nim for information on the honorific used)

Unnie: older sister (of a younger female)

-Ya/-Ah: (added onto the end of a name when talking directly to that person; only used towards friends, subordinates, or peers)

Ya: hey

Ye: yes

Yeobo: honey; darling (usually used by older married couples)

Yeoboseyo: hello (used when answering the phone)

Yeodeol: eight

Yeol: ten

Yeoseot: six

Yut-mugguh: fuck you
