"I've been waiting for you."
Those words echoed throughout the hall.
[What?]
>[Why?]
"Monsters like you never wait for their prey. You pounce on them, seeking them out like a mark on the map."
The person in front of you unsheathed their sword- If you could call it that. It wasn't even pointed, realy. It was a long, thin metal rod, connected to a hollow half-circle guard, with a thicker cylinder at the front. Connected to the guard, however, was a metal wire. A metal wire that glowed purple. Electricity crackled down to the end of the sword, to a round, circular tip. It was something you would use in fencing, but it was deadly now.
The person didn't try and fight, he tried to run. He ran to a room filled with his comrades, commanding them to leave, telling them they needed to escape. You simply stood there, your dull blade in hand.
>[Follow them]
You followed the boy, the man.. No, they didn't fit any of those. He wasn't young per say, but he certainly didn't look old. He was a paradox, in all things. He wasn't human nor was he an animal. He wasn't a boy nor a man. He wasn't deadly, but he wasn't safe. He wasn't funny looking, but he wasn't elegant. He didn't want to fight, but he readily jumped into them.
He wasn't evil, but he wasn't good.
When you reached the room of people, they froze. They dropped what they were running with, they stopped reaching for their dear belongings. The miniature ball, the 'party', was a room full of statues. The room was decorated with torches on the wall, a tiled floor and bookshelves and tables of wine. But it wasn't regal, it was dirty, and dungeon-like. The place seemed to have been an undecorated room, converted for the happiness of these villains.
Statues were easy to hit, after all.
After you were done, only glowing blue ashes remained, piled onto the floor. The person stared at you.
Why?
"They didn't do anything wrong. They were dancing, and we were happy. Every time you show up, they're as good as dead. You did it to that godforsaken cave- It was a god-approved contract, but you ended up messing everything up! They were left to starve down there, you know! The most you gave to them was four potatoes! Then you show up at my home, in the midst of one of their only days of happiness, and senselessly slaughter them all. You're supposed to be a hero, you know that. You saved every place you came across, but to our expense. You realize you literally hunt down our colleagues just to make yourself and your friends more powerful, right? You can't even hurt those who want to be put out of their immortal curse, because the gods decided we were the bad guys! There's a reason we actively try to take down the divine, you know? We're all nothing but toys to them! Little toy soldiers to play with!"
He walked towards you, his 'sword' in hand. Pointed at your chest, he kept approaching, but made sure he stepped around the ashes."Should you hurt one more of us, you're dead. Dead, dead, dead. Dead as everyone you've killed, dead as the near thousands you've struck down."
With that, he ran. He ran out, onto the platform at the other doorway. He jumped off, but as he hit the ground, he still ran.
You followed, leaving footsteps behind in the blue powder.
'You weren't the monster. He was.'
You told yourself those lies, pretending to be a savior.
You plunged into the ground, your sword ledging itself into the carved pathway. You sprinted to the person in front of you, knocking them down.
You chose what's right or wrong. You were justice. You, and only you, knew this world.
They got up, and their sword crackled once more. They lunged, their sword going straight to you, but you parried easily. Occasionally, his foot went parallel to his sword, kicking you in the chin.
"Hah! You monsters don't have a chance of getting my other eye! My tiger already got that privilege."
>[What?]
[...]
"Haven't you noticed? As a child, I've got them all. My current form has only one, I shot it out!" They laughed.
>[That's not very funny..]
[...]
"Your opinion. As a tiger, that was when I let a close friend examine my powers. At the expense of my eyes, of course- But thankfully that experi- Examination gave me enhanced smell and hearing! Amazing, the powers of science! No delusions required, but of course I still use one."
They sent a few icicles parallel to both their foot and their sword. They hit, but melted upon impact. They used this moment to lower your defenses, dealing much more damage than normal attacks.
Then you hit them. They stumbled, falling onto your sword. Impaled. They dropped their 'sword', and fell onto you. The weight made you fall as well, but only to the ground.
"You're a monster, but you've fought well."
And with that, their final defeat, their finale of sorts, came to an end.
And you were ever as much of a monster.
