CW/TW: Cannibalism, blood, gore, something that may be either derealization or disassociation, probably a panic attack, unhinging jaw, murder, firearms, sharp weapons, vomiting.

Fun Fact! This chapter is the SpiritVerse Canon version of Chapter One of Volcanology; "Of All the Scenarios."
A/n: Name based off of the song 'Animal Cannibal' from Possibly in Michigan!
A/n 2: bear with me folks we have Amarai mauling someone to death, it gets rough. I had a lot of fun with this one.
Monday night, 3:05AM. An hour before Amarai's shift ended. Tonight, Amarai had wished at least something would go wrong, just for the funnies. She was pretty much alone on the first floor. There were only a couple of security people around, the 22-year-old (and, in Amarai's opinion, kinda cute) receptionist at the front desk with the white and sky-blue uniform that she wore with her sleeves up, and a couple of coworkers on the upper floors. Amarai was a volcanologist, and a very reckless one at that. That's why they moved her to a lower floor, incase another incident happened again. She wore her lab coat and goggles and things, except for the gloves. In verbatim, fireproof gloves were for cowards, and she wasn't a coward. She had her hair tied up in the usual pigtails and was mostly goofing off with the fiery substances around her lab, including a very questionable amount of white phosphorus sitting in her desk drawer "for emergencies," when she first started hearing it. To people on the second floor or in the basement, it would've sounded like a single set of pops, similar to popcorn. For those on higher floors, they would've turned deaf ears. To those in farther away rooms (even though there wasn't anyone in them tonight other than Amarai and the receptionist), it would've sounded like fireworks or, like usual, Amarai doing something. But for Amarai, who was quite close to the entrance, it was entirely possible to make out what the sound was. And it was the gurgled shriek before and after that tied it into a conclusion.
Gunshots. Well, this was new. Certainly exciting. She loved the way the adrenaline started coursing through her as she trembled and listened, usually, but death was mostly a whole other subject. She was both bummed out that the pretty receptionist lady was probably dead before she could even muster the courage to get her name, and was a tad bit, tiny bit, at-a-miniscule-level, molecularly frightened by thoughts of murder. Probably because of what she'd like to call her second-and-a-half-degree a while back, but that's a story for another day. She had three choices. One, lock her door like the procedure they've been taught. Two, go out there and investigate. Three, sit there and wait for the action to come to her. Eventually, option number two became appealing to her taste and she stepped out of the large lab coat she was wearing, throwing on her blue jacket and buttoning it up before putting her goggles back onto her head, grabbing the semi-rusted trench knife from her desk drawer and slowly climbed out of the room, hoping she could scare the intruder off as per usual.
This one felt like the same old gag she'd face every once in a while. Person in all black, hood up, face-covering mask, gun locked and loaded. By the body type and height, Amarai assumed this one was a man, most likely in his late twenties or early thirties.
She crouched down, hoping she, albeit having glowing eyes and vibrant attire, would go unnoticed. She was incorrect. He turned to her and she saw him start cocking the gun, aiming at her.
There were beats of silence, before a voice in her head screamed at her, 'DUCK!' it cried, and Amarai complied.
Her crouching form slunk farther down as a loud BANG rang just above her head, causing the wall to crack and crumble slightly from the force of the bullet bending the material to its will. More silence followed as the intruder stood in shock at the semi-human dodging a bullet — quite literally — before he aimed again. But before he could shoot, Amarai had run.
