4: An Unexpected Case

"Hey, dad! Hey troublemakers! I'm home!" I shouted enthusiastically when my hand pushed the doorknob.

Silence.

"Huh?" My face twisted with confusion. There was no reply... And the whole atmosphere was completely silent. Even though I didn't know what was happening, I had a sudden weird feeling in my gut. The silence was almost tensed, not a pleasing one. What happened?

I entered, quietly locking the door behind me. I took off my shoes before wiping my feet on the mat placed at the entrance. Soon, I walked inside, trying to reach further for some clues of why everyone was so silent.

...

"Da-" My words got stuck in my throat at the sight. Dad was sitting in the living room, completely focusing on the laptop before him while my brothers were sitting on the hands of the sofa, looking at dad's laptop screen intensely.

They were all together but there was some awkwardness between them. They all were completely silent and had anxiousness latched to their faces. Especially dad, he was exceptionally very silent.

What's going on...?

"Dad? Yoongi and Namjoon? What's wrong? You all looked very zoned out." I spoke while advancing towards them, tiredly. Yeah... School really did drain me out a lot.

Putting my bag on the side of the sofa, I sat beside dad, trying to initiate a conversion.

"Dad!" I shouted a little and that's when he flinched. Looking back at me with his wide eyes, he blinked continuously as if in a trance. "H-Huh?" He said, more like questioning back.

"Ugh! Dad? What's happening? You all seem really exhausted. What are you doing?" I asked, trying to get a glimpse of the laptop's screen but couldn't when he turned it around with hesitance.

"O-Oh... it's nothing. You should go back to your room, Miso." He spoke reluctantly but I wasn't going to buy it cuz I already knew something was wrong. And trust me, when I say wrong, it means absolutely wrong...

I just crossed my arms infront of my chest in an unconvincing manner and looked at him with a displeased, strict look. He just looked away. Right... I look just like my mom, and whenever I give him that look, he can't lie to me because if he does, he feels as if he's lying to mom which he undoubtedly wouldn't like to.

"Miso... Can't you see? Dad's already very tired. Don't pressurize him mo- nevermind."

I interrupted Namjoon with my glare while Yoongi just rolled his eyes at him.

"Speak," I commanded when dad looked in my way.

He was about to speak but soon closed his mouth with a sigh and looked down worriedly. He soon inhaled sharply before looking back at me.

"You know about that 'joker'?" Yoongi suddenly cut him off even before he could speak and I looked at him with narrow eyes.

Huh?

"Yes, I do. Why're you asking about it?" I inquired back. His demeanor looked as if he didn't want to tell me about it.

"Until now, some detectives from dad's department were taking care of this case and dad was just helping them a little but now, the whole joker case has been transferred to dad." He finished before fisting his hands.

"What?!"

"I mean, isn't that good? That's one of the most trending hot topics these days! Dad can gain a huge profit by solving this case. He may also be promoted. Then what's the problem in it?" I asked with a confusing smile but my smile dropped the next second when dad scoffed at my words.

"It may be a huge case but is very dangerous... That man has murdered more than twenty people in just 2 days! Do you know how clever he is? It's completely impossible to get him in jail without a single scratch on myself or you three!" He shouted out desperately. I moved slightly because of how furious he sounded...

W-Why...

Why is he so angry? Isn't this his job? Fighting and trapping the criminals? Isn't that his passion? Then why is he so...

He looked down and my heart dropped when I saw the slight glistening tears in his eyes.

"D-Dad..."

"More than myself, I'm worried about you, Miso! You know? He's really weird and creepy. Murders anyone at any place after midnight. We should be a little careful..." He nodded to himself and it was my chance to ask him a question that was stuck in my mind for a long time.

"Dad? Didn't this so-called joker already disappear six months ago? Then why is he back again?"

"That's the mystery! No one knows what he wants... He's just randomly killing anyone..." He started, pushing back his glasses from the brim of his nose to his eyes. "Also, he's very different. He doesn't kill without anyone knowing... Before he murders, he gives a clue as to where he'll murder. And yet, no one is ever able to even spot him while he? He kills his victim so clean, that there are no traces of any murder. No fingerprints, no signs of pressurizing. Just a simple sign 'V' on the victim's body..."

I gasped at his unexpected words. W-What... That's weird. This 'V' joker guy is really something... Shouldn't be taken for granted, should he?

"So yeah... I'm busy on this mission and I want you all to leave me alone for some time. I need to focus." Dad started to type on his keyboard.

I just looked down while Yoongi and Namjoon kept looking at the screen with eager eyes.

What can I do? Dad's so pressurized... I need to take away his burden.

But what can I do in this?

Shall I...

Yes, I can!

"U-Um, dad?" I blinked my eyes cutely when he looked back at me with one of his eyebrows raised. Smiling at him, I finally spoke.

"Dad? Shall I help you in this case?-"

"NO!"

I crawled back in fear.

"D-Dad..."

"Are you freaking crazy Min Miso! There's no way you're getting involved in my business! You should be putting all your attention into your studies right now! You. Are. Not. Going. To. Talk. About. This. Anymore."

I gulped. He looked extremely scary... Dad has always been a calm man. If he gets angry, it means he's really really furious...

I sighed with little tears in my eyes of stubbornness and eventually got up. I carelessly threw the bag on my right shoulder, not caring about the guilty eyes of my brothers towards me, and strutted towards my room and finally closed the door.
