"Rise and shine sleepy head! It's Tuesday!" Anna did a stupid little dance while hopping from one foot to the other.

It's too early for this shit.

"Anna, it's too early for this and why are you in my
room?" I scowled.

"We have reindeer duty." She looked at me with one brow raised and her hands on her hips like that should mean something.

"Okay and?" I replied, still scowling, hoping she takes the hint and leaves me alone.

She sighed and I almost felt bad. Anna has always clung to me no matter how I acted towards her, always reminding her we are not friends but she seems to think we are, best friends even. What even is that?

"Can you at least leave the room while I get dressed?"

"Right! Right of course sorry! I'll be outside waiting. I got you a sandwich just incase" she hurriedly left just before I could say thank you.

Looking at the clock on the table I sighed deeply and moved to get off the bed and instantly did a double take.

Is that my sketchbook? I usually kept it under my bed? Didn't I leave it outside last night? Or did I? As long as it was here I didn't have anything to worry about. My sketchbook contained everything I ever wanted. The kind of life I wanted outside the gift factory, my nonexistent life as a human, my deepest desires. I touched the cover lightly with a wistful expression on my face. I thought about Anna, why would anyone be happy to be here?

My ears glowed, signifying time for work. I hurriedly did my morning routine and met Anna in the stables. If there was anything I loved about being here it was the reindeers. They were beautiful, strong and they made everything better.

"Good morning Rosa, are the boys behaving?" I stroked our oldest reindeer with a smile on my face, she made a sound between a snort and a grunt and I laughed.

"That's a no right? Yeah I thought as much"

Anna handed me my sandwich, mumbling a thank you I took a quick bite and proceeded to feed the reindeers.

"It's crazy how this is the only place I get to see you smile, you always seem miserable wrapping gifts". I turned to look at Anna and rolled my eyes.

"You obviously stare at me too much, I wonder how you always get the highest number of gifts wrapped every year"

"Because I love it"

"Of course you do" I replied, turning around so she doesn't see my face.

"Why don't you though? I turned around to look at Anna, completely perplexed and angry she could even ask me that. But then again she loves it here, I don't. I can't be angry at her for loving the life she lives. But that doesn't mean I have to love it too.

"Leave me alone Anna". And she did, seemingly realizing any more than this and I might blow up. But not without looking at me with pity. I didn't need her pity. She wouldn't understand.

"Anna and Charlie please report to the meeting room."
"Anna and Charlie please report to the meeting room".

I froze, and so did Anna. That was new, it hasn't even been an hour yet.

Anna had a huge smile on her face. Of course she does.

"What if we're being promoted? Oh my God what if I wrapped Rory's gift wrongly? I'm hungry, is it hot in here?" Anna looked close to passing out and I might not like her but she makes a mean peanut butter and jelly sandwich so no Anna, you're not dying on my watch.

"Breathe Anna, deep breaths, you're doing great."With my hands on her shoulder I attempted to calm her down.

"You are literally a perfectionist and can wrap anything no matter how big it is. I'm sure you're being promoted, you're great at what you do."

"You think so?" She looked at me like I hung the moon and I smiled a little.

"I know so" Rosa seemed to agree because she came close to Anna as well and licked her face. And just like that, Anna was happy.

"You're right, thank you Charlie. I'm so glad you're my best friend."

I'm not but okay.

Anna hurriedly went to the meeting room and I sluggishly followed. What if I'm being fired? What happens after? Can I even get fired? My ears glowed. I'm nervous

We walked in on Tim. A color green looking at the note in front of him incredulously like something was wrong with it. I took a seat next to Anna and rapidly tapped my knee. What does he keep looking at?

"You're...."

He paused and cleared his throat. Whatever was in that note was making me nervous as well.

"You're on the first shift on gift delivery" Tim said, still going through the notes like something was wrong.

And it was.

I was a color Red. A red. I'm not due for delivery for probably the next twenty years.

A color Red.

Delivery, Gift delivery.

I was... I was going to see the world.

Anna looked broken. Her mouth hung open and her eyes looked like it'll pop out of her head if she opened it any wider. I wasn't any better, I was breathing fast.

"That's not possible" I said to Tim, something was wrong.

"You think I don't know that?" Tim bellowed. Anna snapped out of her trance and asked the most important question.

"When?"

"Next week" Tim replied. Taking of his glasses and breathing deeply.

And me? I pass out.

It gets better, I promise.
