Chapter 4

The event of Sunday night was temporarily removed from my mind. I was home. My father received me from school Monday morning, and also received my marks. He was yet again proud of me, as I had topped my classes once more and received another year's scholarship. I knew my father wasn't well after my mother had left him eighteen years ago, and I knew his business was suffering because of it. He was barely able to afford my tuition but he wanted me to attend that school so badly that he would have scraped his pennies together just to send me.

He wanted to give me the finest education so that I would never have to marry anyone because of my financial desire. Work hard and become someone great, was what he always preached to me. His marriage with my mother was from his perspective one out of love. He was madly in love with my mother, who was a raising model. But to her, she saw my father as a stepping stool. She used him and his money in order to finance her career.

When she found out she was pregnant, she was stark mad. She threatened to abort me, but my dad eventually paid her a large sum. After that she wasn't going to stick around for the burdens of motherhood. She'd packed her bags and when she finally gave birth she was gone. Oddly enough, I found myself receiving birthday gifts along with a card signed with her name.

My granny said, that even though she might have left in a haste she might have regret walking out on me. My dad never talks about her; although when I was small I pestered him till he got mad. "I loved your mother, but she walked out on me. I guess I couldn't provide her with what she wanted." After growing up however, and still never seeing my mother. I relinquished the thought that she had possibly loved me. I was determined to hate her. As for my dad, I pitied him. After my mother left him, I am almost sure he had never been with another woman.

When I woke up, it was already Tuesday. The aroma of my grannies special stew filled my room, and my empty stomach transported my body to the kitchen. I was in luck, as I reach my granny was now turning off the stove. "Well dear, you could have at least combed out your hair. You look like a mess." She said a hint of a Texas accent in her voice.

"I need food!" I said smiling and rubbing my hands together. She laughed and place a plate with some boiled potatoes, rice, stew and a green salad in front of me. My smiled grew larger but was masked as I stuffed my mouth with the delicious food. God, it had been a long time since I ate a good hearty meal, all that was served in the cafeteria were high class meals, which tasted wonderful. But nothing could beat the taste of my granny's food.

After lunch, I spent the day from my bed, to the TV room, to the library finishing up my school assignments. When my dad came home from work we spent some time together. This routine repeated itself day after day, until a letter came for me from my mother. My dad was shocked. He held out the mail for me already recognizing the handwriting on the envelope.

He was waiting in anticipation, wondering what she had written. I opened the letter apprehensively. It was brief but read,

"Dear Emily,

As you know I haven't been much of a mother to you. Allow me to make it up to you. I am heading out to Hawaii, for business. I do have some time after my shoots and hope that you can follow me here. Enclosed is a ticket. It's non-refundable so I really hope you come.

Love Mom."

I handed my dad the letter as he read and re-read it. He frowned while looking at it, perhaps he was hoping she would have remembered him too. I held out the ticket, and soon found myself on a plane heading to my mother. Both my granny and father were happy for me. They wished me well and encourage me to make things work out with her, "After all, she did give birth to you. Treat her well and I'm sure she'll treat you the same." My dad said as I hugged him before boarding.

As I reached in the airport, I scanned the people waiting, hoping that one of them was her. But I didn't see her. Disappointed I sat down next to the doorway and waited.

......Eight hours later.....

It was half past ten, and by now I was hungry and tired. I hadn't moved from my spot thinking that she would have past me and I would not have known. I rummaged through my pack back until I finally found the number she had left me. I was so angry at her now, all I wanted to do was to go home.

"Hello, Annabelle speaking." Said a very seductive voice.

"Mom, where are you?"

"Oh dear, was your flight today! I am so sorry. I'll send someone to pick you up. Talk with you soon." She said disconnecting the call. No how are you? I miss you. Glad to hear your voice. Nothing, she didn't even seem excited on the phone. Were all mothers like this, or just mine?

A man dressed in a black suite suddenly came up to me. Before I had time to react he said, "Are you Emily Henderson." I peered at him; he seemed like a decent guy. Realizing my discomfort he went on, "I am Gunner Pierce, your mother's personal assistant. I have heard much about you, and your father. You see I have been working with your mother since she began her career. Let's get to the villa. Bella will be expecting us." He took up my bag and I followed him reluctantly.

"How did you recognize me?"

"Oh you look very similar to your mother. And you have her eyes." He smiled as he said so, and I knew instantly that he admired my mother more than what a personal assistant should. Perhaps he was the reason she had left us. I turned away from his face and he didn't say anything until we reached. The place was large, the building extending to four floors and spread out over about three lots of land. There was an enormous lawn in front. The place was like a dream.

As we pull towards the door, a group of ladies a few years older than me came out. They were all beautiful and well known models. Among them were three men who were equally attractive. I figured that they were all here because of their work just like my mother.

Gunner took me to the second floor and allowed me to enter a room by myself. She was here. Sitting on the bed of the room scanning me with her mouth slightly upturned.

"Well, well, well... we finally met." She said standing up. "This is your room for the past few days. Gorgeous, isn't it!" she said proudly. "This is the life I enjoy; of course you could understand why I couldn't stay with you and your father. He simply could never have afforded this lifestyle."

"This is only material beauty. I am sorry, but I can't say that I'll enjoy this."

She scoffed and then pursed her mouth, "We will see. This is as spoiled as you'd ever get, especially if you continue to be so uptight. I can't believe why he suggested I put you in the show, I mean I know you got your looks from me. But you don't have the talent to live up to my reputation."

"Well then I won't be in your show."

"Sorry dear, but you don't have a choice. Would you like me to call your father? I am sure he'll still jump to his feet when I ask of him." She said almost laughing.

"So you never call me here so we could get to know one another."

"If that's what you want dear, then sure I could tell you about myself. And you could talk about your life; just I won't be interested in it."

"So you are threatening me with my father. What would he say to me that would make me be in your show?"

"It's not what he'll say to you, but what he'll do. Has he ever been constant with any woman after me? I bet if I show up in front of him now, he'll hold his arms out. And that's your father for you. Do you really want to see him go through his pain again?"

"Do you even have a heart?"

She smiled, touched my cheek and said, "But I know you do."
