CHAPTER 2
I woke up the next day, feeling dejected. My main problem was how to avoid prom. My friends expected me to go. As I usually went, dateless; but it never bothered me. Now I guess I should be delighted, since the most powerful guy in school asked me to go with him. But I wasn’t. He was handsome, his ‘power’ meant nothing to me and I hated his arrogant attitude. Here was a guy I knew expected everyone to bow at his feet; no one to deny him; and to get away with anything. Quite frankly, with what happened last night; I was afraid of him.
I left the room, hoping that the fresh air would help me come to a resolution. Cassie was asleep, still in the clothes she wore last night. Since there weren’t any need to wake early I did not expect to get any help from her till after lunch. Outside, although well lit by the morning sun was without life. A few students walked to and from their dorms to the dining hall; but none lingered outside.
Absently mindedly, I walked around campus when I tripped over something lying on the pathway. “Sorry, let me help you.” A man said. He looked to be around my own age and had bright blond hair brushed the sides of his cheek. He with his hand extended but his body was surrounded by light. It might have just been because he was standing in front of the sun, but at that time he was like a angel helping me out of my problems.
I took his hand and he pulled me up. He picked up the shovel which had tripped me and looking abash said, “Are you hurt in any way?”
I smiled, I stretched out my hands and then patted my limbs, “No, I seemed intact. But what are you doing with a shovel?”
“Ah, well. I am the gardener here.”
“Really, I thought you were a student here. You seem so young to be working already.”
“Well, it is easy for the upper class to see things like that. But with my situation, I can’t afford not to work.” He said in a defensive manner.
“I am sorry.” I said, sensing that I had threaded on a sensitive matter. We were both quiet for a while, when he suddenly began laughing. Startled I looked up at him, he tried to holding back his laughter.
“I am joking.” I stared back at him with a bit of annoyance evident on my face. “Please forgive me, I know I went too far but you were so gullible.” He was still smiling with amusement, but seemed sincere with his apology.
“Fine, I forgive you. But what are you doing with a shovel?”
“I am doing some gardening, though I am not a gardener by profession. I actually like growing plants.”
“Why are you even doing this now? We are leaving Monday.”
“True, and because of that I needed to move some plants from pots into the earth.” He said sitting under a nearby tree. I followed him and sat so that both of us were bracing behind the tree’s trunk.
“You seem familiar.”
“Yes, well I am in your science class, and math, English and all your classes.”
“All.my.classes! When? How? Who are you?” I said shocked and flustered.
“Emily, I think you’re the only girl in class that could never notice me before. I’m Philip, and I have had been smitten over you for about two years now.”
“You like me?” I said, in disbelief. “I mean, take a good look. I don’t have the body like Kady, the attitude like Kim nor the looks like Cassie. What could make you like me, especially for so long?”
“Guys don’t always look at beauty. Yes, I know you don’t like dressing up, and you hate high heel. But your innocence is very attractive.”
“That’s what you say, but you must be the only one. I have no charm towards the opposite sex.” At least I didn’t think so. I knew I lacked sexual appeal, and suddenly realizing that I wondered what had possessed Leon to ask me to prom. From the rumors of him, he had been with most of the girls on campus. He was a notorious playboy just like his partner in crime Duncan.
“I wouldn’t agree with you…You underestimate yourself.”
“If you’ve been attracted to me, then why haven’t you ever asked me out?”
“You don’t make it easy for a guy to do that.” He said rubbing his head, “And as I could recall the last guy that actually did make an attempt, you blocked him out.”
“No one has ever made an attempt on you.” I said, with certainty.
“Okay, you are officially denser than I thought.”
“Hey!” I said sitting up and getting angry.
“Well, I take it as a good sign. It means that I can be the first to ask you?” He turned towards me making eye contact, “Will you go to prom as my date?”
I stood with my mouth slightly a gaped. I wanted to respond but I was too shock by his sudden words. His own emotions seemed to be going through phases, first he looked confident, then with my delay unsure, and as I cleared my throat he seemed disappointed.
“I would love to, but I don’t have plans of attending prom tonight; maybe some other time.”
He smiled, “I think I was expecting this. What do you plan to do that is so important you can’t make it to prom?”
“I don’t have anything to do, I just don’t feel like going to prom this year.”
“Then what would it be okay if you met me in the garden.”
“Like a date?”
“Yes. Have you been there yet?”
“No.”
“I decorated it, and I usually light it up right before prom. It would be nice if you could come…You could tell what you think of it.”
“I’ll think about it.” He suddenly lit up and where once was disappointment, now carried the brightness of his smile.
