"JACKSON HAS A SEPARATED SHOULDER," Danny's voice seeped through the speaker on Eli's phone

"JACKSON HAS A SEPARATED SHOULDER," Danny's voice seeped through the speaker on Eli's phone. A disappointed sigh toppled from Eli's lips upon hearing the news. He slammed his locker shut, his phone in one hand against his ear and a plastic-wrapped plate of zucchini loaf in the other.

A few students milled about the hall. He weaved through them and headed towards Coach's office. Eli grumbled, "What are we going to do?"

"Depend on Scott, I guess," Danny said and paused for a brief moment. "Honestly, with Scott's current track record, I wouldn't say that's a bad thing. We can still win without Jackson."

"He might end up playing though, especially if Lydia has anything to do with it."

Danny sighed. "Lydia always has something to do with it."

"Hey, I got to go bring this loaf to Coach, see you later?" Eli said once he turned the corner that lead him to the familiar hall where Coach's office resided.

"Are you kissing ass again?" Danny laughed through the phone.

Even though Danny couldn't see, he shook his head. "Me no. My aunt, yeah, I think so."

"Sure."

"Wow. My best friend doesn't believe me. That hurts dude," Eli scoffed, his voice coated with feigned hurt.

"Bye, Eli," Danny said before hanging up the phone, leaving a faint static noise to play against Eli's ear.

He shoved his phone into the pocket of his jeans.

With his aunt's zucchini loaf in one hand, Eli turned the handle of the coach's office door and pushed it open. As he did so, the familiar voice of Scott McCall seeped through, allowing Eli to catch the second half of his sentence.

"—I can't play the game tomorrow night."

The blond's jaw dropped. Was Scott serious? He injured Jackson and was now trying to get out of playing? Was he trying to screw the team over? But, then again, maybe Scott was going through something. What did Eli know about about the teen's life? Almost nothing. So, even though if Scott didn't play the game tomorrow and even though that would most likely lead to the team losing, Eli tried to remain unbiased. However, he was still pressed about how reckless Scott was at practice the other day, thus leading to Jackson's injury.

"I'm not following." Coach furrowed his brows, looking at Scott as if he were crazy. Eli went to leave, hopefully, uncaught by the two in a heated conversation, but before he could slip behind the door, Coach raised a finger, telling him to hold on. Turning his gaze towards Eli who had (begrudgingly) slipped into the office, he asked, "Montgomery, is that zucchini loaf?"

Eli nodded and placed the plate on the desk. "Aunt Sam made too much."

"God! I could marry your aunt," Coach exclaimed and a loud single laugh broke through his throat. He gave Eli a pointed look. "Seriously, though. Let me know if... you know."
