Korra opened her eyes drowsily. "Mummy?Daddy?" she whispered, rubbing her eyes as she sat up. She was in a small boat on the coast of some strange island. "Mummy! Daddy!" she started to call out frantically, walking out of the boat and along the beach. On her left were a few old, crooked houses. On her right was the crystal-clear blue sea. Sunlight filtered through the clouds, shining onto Korra. Staring out into the ocean, memories started filling her head.
The image of a storm flashed in her mind. The crying sound of her mother telling her to stay safe, to stay strong. The way that an enormous monster rose from the depths of the ocean. She knew what it was. It was a Kraken from the old stories that her elders in her village used to tell her. No one ever survived the Kraken's attacks. Except for her. She knew that her parents were gone.
Breaking down into sobs, Korra knelt onto the ground, trying to wipe her tears with her sleeve. "Hello, little one. Where are your parents?" a soft, comforting voice asked Korra. She looked up with tears streaming down her cheeks, to see an old man reaching out a hand for her. Korra took it and the old man helped her up. "I am Uncle Roger, where are your parents?" the old man asked once again.
"My...my parents are gone. They... they were attacked by a..." Korra said in between sobs as she steadied herself. "Kraken," she finished.
"Oh, I'm so sorry for you... but you could come and stay with me for a little while! I can't keep you in my house for too long, my wife would never approve of it," Uncle Roger said with a grin. Korra's frown immediately turned into a smile.
"Yes, I would love to!" she exclaimed enthusiastically.
As Uncle Roger led Korra to his house, he explained to Korra some of the basic neccesities needed to survive out in the ocean, assuming that she would travel in the ocean. He explained to Korra that she would at least need food, a water supply, a boat and a simple weapon to survive out in the ocean. Korra nodded her head.
As Korra stepped into Uncle Roger's house, her eyes widened. The walls were lined with fishing nets and spears used to catch fish. "This is your first weapon. Be careful with it." Uncle Roger handed Korra two small daggers. As Korra held the daggers in both of her hands, it felt like she was at home. The handles fit her hands perfectly, almost like it was made for her. She was also handed a small belt for her daggers, a big water bottle, some food, a medium-sized canoe, which was placed outside Uncle Roger's house, and a fishing net. "Thank you, Uncle Roger..." Korra smiled. She did not want to leave this house, but she knew she had to.
Suddenly, a knock on the door could be heard."Roger! Roger!" a woman's voice impatiently called out. "Go! Go through the back door, and good luck!" Korra did not wanta to leave. Uncle Roger was her first friend after she had lost her parents."GO!" Uncle Roger whispered-shouted. "Stay strong, Korra. I know you will grow up to become a strong woman," Uncle Roger added. Korra nodded and reluctantly ran out of the back door.
As Uncle Roger's wife was let into Uncle Roger's house, Korra used all her strength to push the canoe onto the water. As she hopped onto the canoe, which was slowly moving out into the ocean. She put all her supplies into the storage area in her canoe, and tried to self-teach herself how to sail the canoe. She attatched her daggers to her belt and pulled some ropes on the canoe, trying to steer it in the right direction.
It was not going to be easy to sail this thing.
